Netflix is officially moving forward with a sequel to its successful 2026 action film ‘War Machine’, as reported by Netflix viewing data updates. The original movie quickly became one of the streamer’s biggest releases of the year, and now a follow-up is already in early development.

Patrick Hughes will return as director for the sequel and will co-write the new film alongside James Beaufort. Hughes is not only directing once again but is also stepping back into producing duties, maintaining his involvement with the franchise from the first film.

Returning production partners include Todd Lieberman, who is producing through Hidden Pictures, alongside Rich Cook from Range Media Partners. Hughes’ own production company, Huge Film, is also back on board, along with Greg McLean. Alex Young will produce for Hidden Pictures, and Valerie Bleth Sharp is attached as executive producer.

The original ‘War Machine’ became a major streaming success after its release on Netflix. According to platform data, the film has garnered around 139 million views since its launch, placing it among the top 10 most-watched Netflix original films of all time. At one point, it was ranked at number 10, with potential to climb even higher as Netflix continues to track its performance over a 91-day viewing window.

The film stars Alan Ritchson in the lead role, who is expected to reprise his character for the sequel. ‘War Machine’ follows a group of elite Special Ops recruits undergoing a grueling training program, only to encounter a mysterious and deadly force that turns their exercise into a fight for survival.

The movie combines military action with science fiction elements, particularly as the recruits realize they are not merely facing a standard combat scenario. Instead, they confront an unknown killing machine that pushes them far beyond the limits of their training.

The original cast also includes Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Keiynan Lonsdale, and Daniel Webber. Several surviving characters from the first film are expected to influence the story moving forward, although Netflix has yet to confirm full casting details for the sequel.

‘War Machine’ was first released in a limited theatrical run in Australia on February 12, before arriving globally on Netflix on March 6. The film received generally positive reactions from critics, who described it as a classic-style action movie with a familiar yet entertaining storyline.

The movie was also praised for its large ensemble cast and its blend of survival training with sci-fi threat elements. Its conclusion left room for continuation, which now appears to be progressing with this newly announced sequel.

Behind the scenes, Patrick Hughes made a cameo appearance in the original film, portraying Master Sergeant Hughes in the final Blackhawk sequence. His ongoing involvement in both creative and production roles suggests the sequel will maintain a similar tone and style while further expanding the story.

While Netflix has not disclosed plot details for the sequel, the strong performance of ‘War Machine’ makes the follow-up a clear priority for the streamer. With the original film breaking into Netflix’s most-watched list, expectations for the next chapter are already soaring among viewers and industry observers.
