Netflix Fans Are Crazy About Korean Content, ‘Squid Game’ Dominates

As you most likely know, South Korean movies and series have been popular in the West for some time now. This isn’t surprising as a growing interest in South Korean culture has been observed ever since K-Pop performers started becoming more popular in the West.
Of course, in light of that, Western distributors reacted, but so did the streaming services and as you probably know, Netflix has been one of the first and best in terms of welcoming and distributing Korean works.
Having said that, we have some new numbers that do confirm that Korean content is crushing it on Netflix and if you want to know more details, be sure to continue reading!
Namely, according to the new data by Ampere Analysis, South Korean content is the second-most watched content on Netflix (by country of origin), behind only U.S. productions. And while U.S. productions dominate the platform with almost 60%, the 8% gathered by Korean content was enough to surpass traditionally strong cinematic markets like Japan, the U.K., and even France.
And, as you can see, this has been a trend for some time now.
The data also confirms that South Korean works represent a total of 17% of the platform’s top 500 non-U.S. titles. As you can imagine, Squid Game, Season 2 is on top of this list with almost 620 million streaming hours in late 2024, but the number is sure to increase this year.
All these numbers come to us despite very strong competition, and considering that Netflix’s 2024-28 plan foresees a $2.5 billion commitment to Korean content, we have a lot to look forward to!
