Netflix Releases New Series ‘Legends’ Based on True Story
Netflix has launched a new British crime drama titled Legends, which is already drawing attention for its basis in real events.
According to Netflix and insights shared by critics, the series centers on a covert customs operation in the UK during the early 1990s. During this period, British customs officers faced significant challenges in combating a rising drug smuggling issue. The narrative follows a small team of officers who are deployed undercover to penetrate perilous criminal networks.
What sets this mission apart is that the agents are not seasoned spies; they are everyday individuals from various regions of the United Kingdom. After undergoing basic training, they are sent into the criminal underworld under new identities, referred to as “Legends,” which is the inspiration behind the show’s title.
Critics have largely responded positively, praising the strong direction from Brady Hood and Julian Holmes, as well as the performances of Steve Coogan and Tom Burke. Reviews indicate that the show effectively builds tension through the characters’ identity transformations and the strain of leading a double life.
The Times also rates the series highly, highlighting Burke’s performance as particularly noteworthy. It describes the show as a fast-paced crime drama set in the early 90s, complete with music and humor that resonate with British culture.
Radio Times notes that the series is engaging and flows smoothly across episodes. It also commends Coogan’s portrayal, particularly the subtle character details that enhance his role.
The Telegraph describes it as a confident six-episode thriller that delves into a lesser-known aspect of British crime history. It emphasizes that the story is rooted in real events, adding depth to the drama.
However, not all reviews are entirely positive. Collider points out that the rapid introduction of numerous characters can be somewhat confusing, though it also suggests that this chaos injects energy into the show.
The Independent offers a more critical perspective, stating that the series does not achieve the same intensity as shows like Peaky Blinders or Line of Duty. It describes the series as well-crafted but lacking in memorability.
The Guardian presents a mixed review as well, suggesting that while the show may feel somewhat restrained, it still offers an intriguing story overall.
All six episodes of Legends are now available for streaming on Netflix.
