Netflix Scraps Hit Series from Money Heist Creators Despite Strong Viewership
Netflix has decided to end the run of Billionaires’ Bunker only three months after it first aired. The cancellation comes as a surprise to many, as the Spanish thriller managed to stay on the global Top 10 list for several consecutive weeks.
The series was developed by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, the renowned creative duo behind the global phenomenon Money Heist. Spanish newspaper El País broke the news on Thursday, reporting that the streaming giant has already notified the cast and crew.
The plot centers on a group of ultra-wealthy individuals who retreat to a luxurious underground shelter known as the Kimera Underground Park to escape a potential World War III. While isolated from the nuclear threat outside, old family feuds and class conflicts begin to tear the group apart from within.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the show generated significant interest, racking up 152 million viewing hours and over 20 million total views. It successfully held a spot in the platform’s Top 10 rankings for four weeks between September and October.
Diego Ávalos, a Netflix executive in Spain, had previously hailed the project as the most ambitious production ever filmed in the country. However, production sets are already being dismantled, confirming that there will be no second season.
