Netflix has finalized a deal with director Tim Fehlbaum to helm the English-language remake of the French thriller ‘Black Box’. The streaming service acquired the rights to the project with the intention of adapting the aviation mystery for a broader international audience. Fehlbaum joins the production fresh off the critical success of his historical drama ‘September 5’, which garnered significant awards season attention.

The film serves as a new version of the 2021 French hit ‘BoĆ®te noire’, which originally starred Pierre Niney as an acoustician investigating a plane crash. The narrative follows a talented black box analyst who descends into paranoia while uncovering a conspiracy hidden within the audio recording of a fatal flight. Insiders report that the adaptation will maintain the original’s focus on auditory clues and psychological tension.

Fehlbaum previously gained recognition for the sci-fi thriller ‘Tides’ and has become a sought-after talent following his recent work on the Munich Olympics drama. The director is represented by CAA and Black Bear, agencies that helped package the new feature for the streamer. No screenwriter has been publicly named to adapt the script alongside Fehlbaum at this stage.

Casting decisions for the lead role have not yet been announced, though the technical nature of the protagonist requires a performer capable of carrying complex, solo scenes. Production timelines remain tentative as the project enters early development. Netflix continues to expand its slate of high-concept thrillers by mining successful European intellectual property.
