Netflix’s ambitious sci-fi series ‘3 Body Problem’ is making strides, as a recent production update has disclosed when work on Season 3 is set to commence.

While fans eagerly await Season 2, new reports indicate that filming for the third season is slated to begin in Hungary this June. Production is expected to continue throughout the year, with plans targeting a 2027 release window.

Created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, the series is adapted from the acclaimed science fiction novels by Liu Cixin. Since its launch in 2024, the show has become one of Netflix’s most costly productions, with an estimated budget of around $20 million per episode.

Despite its hefty budget and significant pre-release buzz, the first season reportedly faced challenges in becoming a breakout success for Netflix. While it spent several weeks on the platform’s global charts, it did not achieve the same viewership levels as some of Netflix’s other major originals. Nevertheless, the show garnered positive reviews from critics and cultivated a dedicated fanbase among science fiction enthusiasts.

Netflix later confirmed that the story would progress with two additional seasons. However, reports suggest that Season 2 may have fewer episodes than its predecessor.

Production for Season 2 has already concluded, with filming taking place in Hungary from August 2025 to January 2026. The upcoming season is anticipated to premiere sometime in 2026, although Netflix has yet to announce an official release date.

Interestingly, earlier reports indicated that Seasons 2 and 3 could be filmed back-to-back. At that time, there was no official confirmation from Netflix regarding those plans. Now, new production details suggest that Season 3 will enter active filming shortly after a brief hiatus following the completion of Season 2.

Of course, schedules are subject to change. Since Netflix has not publicly confirmed the precise production timeline, there remains a possibility that filming could extend into early 2027, which could also impact the final release window.

Netflix clearly maintains confidence in ‘3 Body Problem’ despite the mixed performance of Season 1. The streaming service typically moves on quickly from costly projects that fail to resonate with audiences, so renewing the show for two additional seasons speaks volumes. While it may not be a mainstream sensation, the series has garnered a strong following among sci-fi fans eager for more intricate and expansive narratives on television.
