Netflix’s ‘Empress of Flames’ First Look Unveils Thai Throne War Drama
Few narratives resonate across cultures quite like the struggle for a throne. Themes of betrayal, exile, and revenge fit seamlessly in a palace in Southeast Asia, just as they do in any fantasy realm. Netflix is banking on this universal appeal with one of its most ambitious Thai originals to date.
This year, the streaming giant has been expanding its Thai content offerings, ranging from thrillers to courtroom dramas, with ‘Empress of Flames‘ positioned as a key highlight. Produced by Kantana Motion Pictures, known for the hit ‘Master of the House,’ the series is directed by Karn Sivaroj Kongsakul, with a writing team that includes Titipong Chaisati, Nuttapot Potchumnean, Gift Nattamol Paethanom, Nut Nualpang, and Jan Weerasu Worrapot.
Netflix has now released the first look at ‘Empress of Flames,’ a modern interpretation of a classic Thai tale centered on vengeance for the throne. The Thai historical drama is set to premiere globally on December 3, exclusively on Netflix, and the initial images showcase its leads adorned in opulent period costumes. The announcement also details the storyline and the creative vision behind the production.

The narrative unfolds in the Thipaya Kingdom, ruled by the Thipayawongse Dynasty for over 300 years. The throne eventually passes to Queen Tawanthip, portrayed by Khemanit Jamikorn, known as the feared “Demonic Queen,” whose reign is characterized by ruthless brutality. King Phuka, played by Napasranch Mittiraroch, ends her tyranny and spares her bloodline, ushering in a period of peace.
That peace lasts for 18 years. Buraphakham, played by Pakorn Chatborrirak and the eldest son of Queen Tawanthip, leads a bloody uprising and assassinates King Phuka in front of the entire court. The only survivor is Ananthip, played by Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul, who loses everything and is forced into exile.

This disgrace transforms Ananthip from a compassionate princess into a shrewd strategist determined to reclaim her dynasty’s honor. Her journey back is fraught with betrayal and conspiracy. Sekharathewi, played by Narilya Gulmongkolpech, is a Thipayawongse heir and once-beloved friend who becomes her relentless adversary.
Muang Khum, portrayed by Prin Suparat, is the man she loves and her last refuge. Tongnual, played by Amanda Obdam, is a princess from the Kingdom of Meed who wields her charm and wealth as a means to power. Stripped of her legitimacy repeatedly, Ananthip ultimately succumbs to the fire within.
Sivaroj mentions that he approached the project without relying on previous adaptations. “I had never watched any of the previous versions of Empress of Flames before,” he stated in the Netflix announcement. He explained that he began with the original story, aiming to preserve its essence while enriching the characters and their journeys.
Pimchanok, who recently starred in the Netflix action-thriller ‘My Dearest Assassin,’ shared her preparation for such a challenging role. “I want viewers to see her loneliness, the pain of her losses, and the struggles she faces, and understand why she has to stand up and fight,” she expressed. She added that she participated in additional workshops and collaborated with the director on the character’s direction.
The production design team crafted an entirely new world for the series, including a map that outlines each city’s location, lifestyle, and history. This is why the costumes differ from city to city, reflecting each character’s identity and origins. Costume designer Rattanarat Aurthaveekul mentioned that the team blended Asian and Southeast Asian elements instead of basing the looks on any single nation.
The sets are also designed to narrate their own stories. The throne room of the Thipaya Kingdom was constructed from the ground up, and its design conveys perspectives from both those seated above and those kneeling beneath its power. Large supporting-cast scenes enrich the fantasy world.
Netflix describes the project as an epic reimagining by the creators of ‘Master of the House,’ and it is clearly intended to make a significant impact. Khemanit’s Queen Tawanthip is a new character who adds depth to the narrative, allowing viewers to delve into the motivations behind the destruction and conflict. Coverage of the series has labeled it as one of the most significant Thai originals released by the streamer.
For fans of expansive period dramas, the timing is perfect, with the premiere set for early December. The first look suggests a show with considerable scale, centered around characters driven by both grudges and ambition. If it fulfills that promise, it could emerge as one of the platform’s standout international dramas of the year.
