Fans of the Straw Hat Pirates have had a lot to celebrate this year, with a critically acclaimed second season of the live-action adaptation and the confirmation of a third season already in the works. However, one of the more surprising additions to the franchise is not live-action at all. Netflix’s spin-off, titled ‘LEGO One Piece,’ has been quietly generating excitement since its announcement in the spring.

This two-part animated special reimagines the early chapters of the live-action series through a LEGO perspective, featuring Usopp as the story’s whimsically unreliable narrator. In this version, he entertains the newest crew member, Tony Tony Chopper, with exaggerated tales of the Straw Hats’ adventures across the East Blue and into the Grand Line.

Jacob Romero Gibson reprises his role as Usopp for this special, creating a direct connection to the live-action series that fans already love.

This new promotional effort is particularly thrilling for longtime fans of the franchise. A brief teaser for ‘LEGO One Piece’ has now been released, with the full trailer set to drop the following day. This marks a clear indication that Netflix is ramping up its marketing as the special’s premiere date approaches.

‘LEGO One Piece’ is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on September 29, arriving as a two-part event produced in collaboration with the LEGO Group, Japanese publisher Shueisha, and Vancouver-based animation studio Atomic Cartoons.

This project serves as a bridge for the franchise, filling the gap between the recently concluded second season of the live-action show and the upcoming third season, titled Battle for Alabasta, expected to arrive in 2027.

The timing of this teaser aligns perfectly with its bridging role. With live-action fans facing a longer wait for Alabasta, this lighthearted, comedic detour through familiar territory offers something fresh for the fandom without requiring a full new season. The LEGO format also allows for a tone that leans more into humor than the live-action series typically does, perfectly suiting Usopp’s reputation as the crew’s most notorious storyteller.

In addition to the animated special itself, this collaboration has already led to a range of physical LEGO sets inspired by the live-action show, including builds based on locations like the Baratie, Windmill Village, and Arlong Park, as well as a large-scale recreation of Garp’s Marine Battleship. This merchandising effort began well before the special was announced, indicating that Netflix and LEGO have been planning this crossover as a long-term expansion of the franchise rather than a quick tie-in.

For a franchise based on one of the best-selling manga series of all time, with over 600 million copies in print worldwide, finding new ways to keep fans engaged between major releases has clearly become a key strategy. ‘LEGO One Piece’ provides Netflix with a family-friendly entry point into the world while the larger live-action series gears up for its next chapter.

With the full trailer just a day away from this teaser’s release, fans eager for their next glimpse of the Grand Line won’t have to wait long to see how this brick-built retelling unfolds.
