Joe Russo Teases ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is Unlike Any Marvel Movie Before
‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has been a highly anticipated Marvel project, with a tumultuous journey to its release. Initially set for May 1, 2026, the film was later postponed to December 18, 2026, allowing the creators additional time to perfect the production. As the release date approaches, the filmmakers are beginning to reveal what audiences can expect.
The Russo brothers return to direct, collaborating on a script written by Michael Waldron, Stephen McFeely, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers. The impressive cast features Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart, with Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom.
In a promotional interview with Fandango, Joe Russo described the film as intense and noted that it feels “different than any of the other movies that Marvel’s made.” He hinted at surprising developments in the plot and emphasized a significant tonal shift from previous films.
Russo highlighted Downey’s performance, stating that he portrays one of the greatest villains, bringing a mix of gravitas and intensity that can be quite intimidating.
While Marvel fans are familiar with world-ending villains, Russo directly addressed comparisons to Thanos. He characterized Doom as more Machiavellian and manipulative, contrasting him with Thanos, whom he described as a brute force of nature.
According to Russo, Doom meticulously studies his adversaries to ensure he has the tactical and power advantages before engaging. Anthony Russo added that despite Doom’s misguided choices, there’s an underlying validity to his worldview, making the character relatable.
The brothers were careful not to reveal too much but repeatedly mentioned that the ending is very surprising. They expressed excitement about the tonal shift, which they believe will redefine audience expectations.
Regarding the film’s length, Anthony Russo stated that it runs approximately 2.5 hours, which is notably shorter than ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ despite the large cast. He described the narrative as focused and propulsive, centered around a key idea. The interview also referenced new scenes in ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ that connect to the beginning of ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
Downey’s casting has sparked considerable discussion. The Russos have labeled Doom as one of the most complex characters in the comics and chose Downey for his ability to convey both the villain’s immense power and vulnerabilities. Reports indicate that Downey even developed his own backstory for the character and contributed costume ideas.
During a conversation with Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr., Anthony Russo compared the casting to the dynamic between Tony Stark and Captain America in ‘Civil War,’ calling it a deliberately challenging concept. He affirmed that the directors are fully committed to Downey as Victor Von Doom.
He used to be different.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters everywhere December 18. Get your tickets now: https://t.co/J5PUbxvAkc https://t.co/OUutSMZneq— Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) August 15, 2026
The official synopsis reveals that heroes from three distinct universes are on a deadly collision course against an existential threat unlike anything they have encountered. The Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men find themselves entangled in a collapsing multiverse, with Doom at the center of the turmoil.
Principal photography commenced on April 28, 2025, at Pinewood Studios in England, with additional filming in Bahrain and Windsor Great Park, concluding on September 19, 2025. Marketing efforts have ramped up since then, featuring teasers alongside ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ and a full trailer debuting at CinemaCon in April 2026, followed by a Doom-focused preview in August.
If Joe Russo’s insights are accurate, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could signify a notable shift in how Marvel approaches its major crossovers. With a darker tone, a calculating villain, and a surprising conclusion, this film promises to be a departure from the lighter team-ups fans may expect. Coupled with a streamlined runtime for such a large ensemble, the Russos seem poised to deliver something tighter and more audacious than a typical crossover.
