The character John Creasy has resonated with audiences for decades. Introduced in A.J. Quinnell’s 1980 novel, Creasy’s story is one of a mercenary grappling with trauma and seeking vengeance. This narrative found its most memorable cinematic expression in Tony Scott’s 2004 film, where Denzel Washington’s intense performance transformed a mid-budget action thriller into a cultural phenomenon.

That film achieved a remarkable $130 million at the box office against a $70 million budget. While critics had mixed opinions, audiences embraced it, reflected in an impressive 89% score on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. The enduring popularity of the property made Netflix’s decision to adapt it into a prestige series both thrilling and challenging.

Kyle Killen was appointed as showrunner and writer, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II taking on the lead role in June 2024. ‘Creed II’ director Steven Caple Jr. was also brought in to direct the first two episodes. They joined a team of executive producers that includes Arnon Milchan, Peter Chernin, and Jenno Topping, among others.

Instead of revisiting the original novel, the series draws inspiration from Quinnell’s second Creasy book, ‘The Perfect Kill,’ shifting the action from Mexico City to the vibrant, politically charged streets of Rio de Janeiro. The production faced challenges, including an injury to Abdul-Mateen on set in Mexico City, which led to a brief halt in filming.

The series premiered on Netflix on April 30, and the viewership numbers have already made an impact. ‘Man on Fire’ became the most-watched TV series on Netflix during the week of April 27 to May 3, accumulating 11 million views within its first four days. This strong debut is promising for a show with significant franchise expectations and a substantial production scale.

However, critics have been more reserved in their praise. Variety noted that while the show features strong performances and a solid storyline, it doesn’t stray far enough from genre conventions to feel truly unique. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes shows a 62% approval rating based on 26 critic reviews, while Metacritic scores it at 60 out of 100, indicating mixed or average feedback.

Much of the critical discourse centers around the inevitable comparisons to Washington’s portrayal. The Wrap acknowledged that Abdul-Mateen has worked hard to establish his own identity, especially among viewers unfamiliar with the 2004 film. However, it also noted that he may struggle to surpass Washington’s legacy for those who hold nostalgia for the original.

Showrunner Killen expressed confidence in Abdul-Mateen from the outset. In an interview with Netflix Tudum, Killen explained that he was drawn to the actor not for one specific trait but for his versatility, which is essential for the character of Creasy.

Whether the viewership numbers will continue to rise in the coming weeks will likely influence the future of Creasy’s story on screen. Share your thoughts in the comments about whether ‘Man on Fire’ deserves a second season or if Yahya Abdul-Mateen II successfully made the role his own.
