Zach Cregger has been showcasing his deep understanding of what made the ‘Resident Evil’ games a fan favorite throughout this promotional cycle. Each new image released has only solidified his reputation. Following the critical and commercial success of ‘Weapons,’ the director is now focused on reimagining one of gaming’s most iconic horror franchises for the big screen.

This reimagining has been gradually revealed through a series of exclusive looks from Empire, each offering fans another glimpse ahead of the film’s theatrical debut. The latest image continues this trend, providing audiences with a fresh look at how far Cregger is willing to take the creature design, moving beyond the franchise’s classic zombie roots.

The image highlights Austin Abrams’ character, Bryan, a medical courier who finds himself in a nightmare scenario over the course of a single chaotic night. Cregger has been open about his desire for the central protagonist to feel distinctly different from a typical video game hero, describing Bryan as someone lacking combat skills, completely unprepared for survival, and faced with a mission far beyond his expectations.

This characterization has influenced much of the marketing strategy thus far, with Cregger emphasizing that Bryan serves as an audience surrogate thrown into the horror rather than a capable action hero. He likened the setup to Frodo’s journey into Mordor, where someone is thrust into a mission that exceeds their abilities.

Cregger has also been transparent about steering his version of the story away from a conventional zombie film, despite the franchise’s history. He revealed that there are only two or three scenes in the entire film featuring classic zombie encounters, with the majority of the runtime focusing on a broader array of mutated threats born from the T-virus.

This approach aligns with Cregger’s comments about wanting to expand the creative possibilities of the virus on screen, arguing that confining the film to standard zombies would squander the source material’s potential. Each new image released during this campaign has reinforced that promise, showcasing creature designs that extend well beyond the typical undead audiences might anticipate.

The film reunites Cregger with his ‘Weapons’ star Abrams, who portrays Bryan alongside a supporting cast that includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser as Umbrella scientists involved in the outbreak. Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, known for his work on the ‘John Wick’ franchise, ensuring the project has a strong foundation in both horror atmosphere and high-stakes action choreography.

Set during an alternate version of the events in ‘Resident Evil 2,’ the narrative follows Bryan’s delivery route as it descends into chaos amidst Raccoon City’s outbreak. Cregger has described his overall approach as one continuous, relentless sequence, directly borrowing from the pacing rhythm of the games, where players transition from one intense set piece to another with little respite.

With the film’s IMAX production and Cregger’s rising reputation for elevated horror storytelling, excitement continues to build with each new promotional reveal. Fans eager to see how far this reinvention diverges from the character-driven, creature-heavy approach Cregger has promised won’t have to wait much longer.

‘Resident Evil’ is set to hit theaters and IMAX on September 18.
