New ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Poster Highlights Sisterhood Ahead of October Release
Jane Austen adaptations have a rich history of transforming literary classics into awards-season favorites, and Focus Features excels at this formula. The studio’s 2005 rendition of ‘Pride & Prejudice’ garnered four Oscar nominations, and now it’s collaborating once again with Working Title Films for a new interpretation of one of Austen’s cherished novels.
This latest adaptation has been creating buzz since its announcement, thanks in large part to a cast featuring both emerging talents and established stars. Directed by Georgia Oakley, who received a People’s Choice Award at Venice for her debut feature ‘Blue Jean,’ the film is based on a screenplay adapted by author Diana Reid.
The film’s new poster has just been unveiled, emphasizing the emotional essence of the story over its romantic elements. ‘Sense and Sensibility’ stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, and the newly released artwork showcases the two lying closely together, accompanied by the tagline “No one knows your heart like a sister.” The poster confirms the film’s U.S. theatrical release date of Oct. 16.
The release timeline has seen some adjustments since the project was initially scheduled. Focus Features originally planned for a Sept. 11 domestic debut but later confirmed the Oct. 16 U.S. release alongside a Sept. 25 U.K. opening, placing ‘Sense and Sensibility’ firmly in the fall awards conversation.
The narrative follows the Dashwood sisters and their widowed mother, portrayed by Caitríona Balfe, as they navigate life after being forced to leave their family estate, facing financial challenges and the complex marriage market of Georgian-era England. The contrasting personalities of Elinor, who is practical and composed, and Marianne, who is passionate and emotional, create the central tension in Austen’s original work. The intimate framing of the poster suggests that Oakley’s adaptation will focus on the sisterly bond at the film’s emotional core.
The supporting cast includes George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, Bodhi Rae Breathnach as young sister Margaret Dashwood, and Fiona Shaw as the meddling Mrs. Jennings. This ensemble combines fresh faces with more seasoned actors, providing a blend of new energy and established prestige.
Behind the scenes, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing through Working Title, the same banner responsible for previous Austen adaptations, including 2005’s ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and 2020’s ‘Emma.’ Given the strong critical and commercial performance of those past collaborations, expectations for this new ‘Sense and Sensibility’ have remained high throughout its promotional phase.
Edgar-Jones brings a solid box office record to the project, following 2024’s ‘Twisters,’ which grossed $372 million worldwide, and 2022’s ‘Where the Crawdads Sing,’ which earned $144 million against a modest $24 million budget. This commercial success, combined with Oakley’s acclaimed directorial vision, positions this adaptation as one of the most anticipated literary releases of the fall season.
With the poster now establishing the emotional tone and the October release date confirmed, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ seems poised to be a serious awards contender rather than just another period piece.
