Noah Hawley Confirms His ‘Far Cry’ Series Will Not Follow Game Storylines
A new live-action series based on ‘Far Cry’ is currently in development, but fans anticipating a direct adaptation of the games might be taken aback by its unique direction.
In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Noah Hawley revealed that the series will not adhere to any existing storylines from the acclaimed video game franchise. This means iconic characters such as Vaas Montenegro, Pagan Min, and Antón Castillo are unlikely to make an appearance.
Hawley, collaborating with Rob McElhenney on this project, emphasized his desire to craft an original narrative rather than rehashing what players have already experienced in the games. He aims to explore the essence of ‘Far Cry’ in a fresh way, steering clear of direct adaptations of previous plots.
“I’m not specifically adapting any of the games that they’ve put out… Let me have a dialog with this franchise, because this is what I think a ‘Far Cry’ story is,” Hawley stated.
He also discussed the challenges of adapting video game narratives, noting that the structure of games complicates the development of compelling drama for television.
“When you play a video game, you only really move forward through the gameplay section, and then you have these cutscenes that you can skip… that makes the human drama kind of irrelevant to the storyline,” he explained, adding, “That is death for a show.”
This creative approach has already ignited conversations among fans. Many players argue that the story and characters significantly contribute to the popularity of ‘Far Cry’, particularly in titles like ‘Far Cry 3’ and ‘Far Cry 4’, where the villains are central to the experience.
Nonetheless, Hawley appears more focused on the overarching concept of the franchise. The ‘Far Cry’ series is celebrated for its diverse storytelling across various settings, and he intends to leverage that flexibility to create something original for television.
The show is being developed for FX and will diverge from the source material, prioritizing original storytelling over familiar plots or characters.
This decision is undoubtedly a bold one. Fans often yearn to see beloved characters, especially in a series like ‘Far Cry’. However, if executed well, a new narrative could offer a refreshing take. What are your thoughts on this choice? Should the series align more closely with the games, or is a new direction preferable? Share your opinions in the comments.
