Every so often, a film emerges that completely transforms expectations within its genre, and horror enthusiasts have been experiencing just that for weeks. What began as a modest passion project from a YouTube creator has evolved into one of the most discussed box office triumphs of the year.

‘Obsession‘ hit theaters without the extensive marketing or star power typically associated with box office hits, yet it continues to defy all predictions. Week after week, the film has captivated audiences in a manner that most traditional horror releases rarely achieve, and it has now reached another significant milestone.

The film has now spent 46 consecutive days earning over one million dollars at the domestic box office, placing it in an elite category alongside ‘Barbie’ as the fifth-longest streak of its kind since the pandemic. This achievement surpasses the previous 45-day streaks held by ‘Project Hail Mary’, ‘Wicked’, and ‘Across the Spiderverse’, marking an astonishing accomplishment for a horror film without franchise backing.

Curry Barker, the visionary behind the film, cultivated his audience on YouTube long before stepping onto a film set. This background makes the film’s ongoing success even more impressive, especially as its latest nationwide Monday figures mark the highest seventh Monday performance ever recorded for a horror film.

On that Monday alone, the film earned approximately 1.5 million dollars, reflecting only a 35.9 percent decline from the previous week. It achieved this while losing just 88 theaters heading into the weekend, maintaining a remarkable presence in 2,965 locations across the country even at this stage of its release.

These figures have propelled the film’s domestic total to 235.3 million dollars, a number that seemed unattainable just weeks ago. Industry analysts now view a 250 million dollar domestic total as virtually assured, with some predicting the film could ultimately reach between 250 and 270 million dollars before its theatrical run concludes.

What makes this run so extraordinary is the minimal budget it started with. The film was produced for under one million dollars, an almost unheard-of figure for a movie now raking in this level of box office revenue.

Focus Features acquired the global distribution rights for around 15 million dollars, a deal that excluded France, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand. Given the current domestic and international totals, both the producers and the studio are enjoying a return on that initial investment that few could have anticipated.

Just last week, many industry experts believed that 250 million dollars represented the absolute peak of what this film could achieve domestically. Now, that figure is increasingly seen as a baseline rather than a maximum, provided Focus Features continues to manage its theatrical presence effectively and delays the film’s digital release for as long as possible.

This strategy has undoubtedly worked in the film’s favor, allowing it to continue attracting audiences to theaters instead of waiting for a home viewing option. With the film maintaining its strong performance even against new wide releases, there is little sign that its momentum will slow down anytime soon.

For an independent horror film that started as little more than an ambitious idea from a content creator, ‘Obsession’ has emerged as one of the defining box office narratives of the year. What do you think is fueling this film’s remarkable staying power, and where do you predict its final total will land? Share your thoughts in the comments.
