Horror has a new standout voice, and his name is Curry Barker. The 26-year-old filmmaker gained internet fame alongside creative partner Cooper Tomlinson as the duo behind the YouTube sketch-comedy channel “that’s a bad idea.” They transitioned into longer-form horror with the micro-budget slasher ‘Milk & Serial,’ which went viral after its free release on their channel in August 2024, catching the attention of major Hollywood studios. ‘Obsession’ marks Barker’s theatrical debut, arriving with significant momentum that has the industry taking notice.

The film premiered in the Midnight Madness program at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2025, before its wide theatrical release on May 15, 2026. Focus Features and Blumhouse’s highly anticipated TIFF acquisition earned an estimated $17.2 million in its opening weekend, easily surpassing initial projections of $8 million to $9 million. Critics have rated it 95%, while audiences have given it a 94% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with an A- CinemaScore—a rare achievement for the horror genre.

At its core, ‘Obsession’ tells the story of Bear, a lonely twenty-something with an unreciprocated crush on his childhood friend Nikki. After a night out, he drops her off and opens a novelty “One Wish Willow” toy he originally bought for her, wishing she would love him more than anyone else. The wish comes true, and Nikki becomes obsessed with Bear, desperate for his affection. What starts as a darkly comic premise quickly spirals into chaos, culminating in a genuinely devastating final act.

After being possessed by an unnamed entity that transforms her from a kind, intelligent person into a violent, unstable one, Nikki wakes up screaming, covered in blood and surrounded by the bodies of her friends. With the police on their way, she realizes she will be blamed for the carnage. In the final version now in theaters, Bear’s death releases Nikki from the grip of his magic wish.

Star Inde Navarrette spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the emotional weight of that final scene. She revealed that she intentionally avoided reading Bear’s solo scenes when she first received the script, wanting to experience the film solely from Nikki’s perspective. The first time she watched the ending was at TIFF, where she broke down in tears upon witnessing Bear’s complete arc.

Navarrette also mentioned that actor Michael Johnston asked director Curry Barker if Bear could attempt to throw up the pills after taking them, as the character is ultimately too cowardly. It’s Nikki making her own wish in that moment that seals Bear’s fate, leaving him no time to reverse his actions.

Perhaps most striking is the revelation that the film almost concluded very differently. In a conversation with Collider, Navarrette confirmed that a much darker ending was filmed, where Nikki chose to die by suicide after being freed from the curse. The filmmakers ultimately decided against this, opting for a conclusion where Nikki, as a final girl, confronts her grief instead of taking that path.

Navarrette’s performance has drawn comparisons to Linda Blair, with critics noting that she maintains audience sympathy even as Nikki becomes increasingly unhinged. Viewers are constantly aware that she is being controlled by a force she cannot resist. With ‘Obsession’ shaping up to be one of the year’s most discussed horror films, one question remains: did Nikki deserve a cleaner ending, or does surviving with all that trauma present a more authentic conclusion for her character?
