Few anime franchises enjoy the kind of unwavering dedication that ‘One Piece’ has cultivated over nearly three decades. Despite a slowdown in its release schedule in recent years, fans have consistently turned out in large numbers for each new arc and every unexpected twist from Eiichiro Oda.

This loyalty faced a unique challenge in 2026, as the anime transitioned from its long-established weekly format to a more irregular release schedule. The Elbaph Arc commenced this spring after a lengthy winter break, providing fans with new episodes to savor after months of waiting.

Now that this run has concluded, ‘One Piece’ has confirmed that Episode 1180 marks the last episode of the year, with new episodes not set to return until 2027. This announcement came directly from the franchise’s official social media account, ending this year’s chapter on a notably grim note.

Episode 1180, titled “Elbaph in Despair – Diabolical Covenant, ‘Domi Reversi,’” premiered on September 27 and began streaming on Crunchyroll the same day, with a Netflix release scheduled for the following week. The episode continues the aftermath of Imu taking control of Gunko, plunging the Giants of Elbaph into an even more precarious situation than fans had anticipated.

This conclusion reflects a significant shift in how Toei Animation is managing the series moving forward. Instead of airing continuously throughout the year, as it has since its debut in October 1999, ‘One Piece’ has adopted a two-cour seasonal model, limiting output to about 26 episodes annually, with planned breaks between batches.

This change was already evident earlier this year when the anime went on hiatus from January to March before the Elbaph Arc resumed in April. With Episode 1180 marking the end of this structure, fans now face another long wait before the story continues, although Toei has yet to confirm an exact return date for 2027.

In addition to this year’s developments, actor Yuichi Nakamura joined the cast as the voice of Loki, debuting alongside the newly introduced Knights of God. This casting update keeps long-time viewers engaged, even during a season characterized more by setup and tension than resolution.

Beyond the TV anime, ‘One Piece’ has exciting film projects lined up as it heads into its next phase. ‘One Piece Film God Valley’ is scheduled for release in Summer 2027, framed as a significant thirtieth-anniversary project linked to one of the franchise’s most crucial historical mysteries.

A second film, ‘One Piece Film Baad,’ has also been confirmed, although it won’t be released until 2029. Both projects indicate that Oda and the broader production team are planning well beyond the current arc as they map out the franchise’s future over the next several years.

None of this is surprising given the massive success ‘One Piece’ has achieved as an intellectual property. The manga surpassed 600 million copies in circulation worldwide earlier this year, an astonishing figure for a series that began publication in 1997 and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022.

With the anime now on hiatus until next year, fans are left to ponder where the story will go from here, especially with Imu’s increasing influence over Elbaph hanging in the balance as the year’s final image. Given the groundwork laid this season, the eventual return in 2027 carries significant expectations.
