The corporate journey to merge Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery has kept Hollywood in suspense. For months, this deal has unfolded amid bidding wars, antitrust challenges, and leadership changes, with one lingering question: What will the newly combined company be named?

The road to this point has been extensive. Ellison’s Skydance finalized its acquisition of Paramount in August 2025, and in February, Paramount agreed to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. Ellison triumphed in a year-long battle that involved outbidding Netflix and resolving an antitrust lawsuit filed by 12 state attorneys general. Until now, the merged entity was referred to by unofficial names like “WarnaMount” and “ParaBros.”

That uncertainty came to an end on Friday, Oct. 2. David Ellison, chairman and CEO of Paramount Skydance, announced via an X post and a companywide video that the merged company will be named Skydance, as reported by Variety. The $110 billion deal is expected to finalize on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

The name brings back memories of Ellison’s original film production company, established two decades ago, which produced hits like the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series and ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ Inspired by the aerobatic flying known as skydancing, Ellison, a pilot, chose this name. The new corporation will operate under the ticker SKYD, and plans to officially change its legal name to Skydance Corporation.

Ellison emphasized the intention to create a distinct identity for the merged company without overshadowing either legacy studio. Paramount and Warner Bros. will continue to exist as brands under this new umbrella. The accompanying video portrayed the company’s brands as a launch pad and a constellation united by a common vision.

There are legal considerations as well. According to Deadline, the merger’s consent decree prevents any name that favors one studio over the other, making the new name a neutral choice. Additionally, the name removes Discovery, which went public as Discovery Communications in 2008, from the corporate title.

This consent decree imposes significant obligations on the merged entity. It must release a minimum of 30 films annually for the first two years, increasing to 32 films per year for the subsequent three years. The agreement also prohibits the sale or closure of the Paramount and Warner Bros. studios.

Reactions to the new name have been mixed. An analyst from Emarketer suggested that the choice reflects Ellison’s ego, highlighting that Hollywood’s most iconic brands are now under his control. Critics online have echoed this sentiment, arguing that Skydance lacks the historical weight of Paramount or Warner Bros.

Nevertheless, the decision keeps the well-known studio logos prominent. Audiences will continue to see the Paramount mountain and the Warner Bros. shield on films and shows, with Skydance positioned as the corporate parent. This strategy mirrors how Paramount operated after the 2025 deal, initially branding itself as ‘Paramount, a Skydance Corporation’ and later as Paramount Skydance Corporation.

Leadership changes are also taking shape. Ellison has appointed Mattel chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz as co-CEO, with Kreiz managing daily operations and integration while Ellison concentrates on strategy and creative direction. Warner Bros. film executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy are reportedly departing, with HBO’s Casey Bloys anticipated to oversee key programming.

The financial implications are substantial. The company is projected to carry over $80 billion in debt after absorbing the liabilities from previous deals and securing new financing. It will also transition its Class B stock from Nasdaq to the New York Stock Exchange, with trading set to commence on Oct. 6.

For moviegoers, the immediate impact may be minimal, but the symbolism is significant. One of the most influential entertainment companies in the world now has an identity centered around its CEO’s own startup.
