Pokémon Takes Over the Las Vegas Sphere for 30th Anniversary Celebration
Pokémon has been making waves in 2026 to celebrate a significant milestone, with its 30th anniversary festivities spanning video games, theme parks, trading cards, and live events globally. Since the launch of ‘Pokémon Red’ and ‘Pokémon Green’ in Japan on February 27, 1996, the franchise has become one of the most enduring entertainment phenomena worldwide.
Throughout the year, the celebrations have taken many creative forms, including the opening of PokéPark Kanto at Tokyo’s Yomiuriland amusement park and an electronic dance music concert set for Los Angeles. Recently, the Pokémon TCG’s 30th Celebration expansion was released globally, offering both longtime fans and new collectors another way to commemorate this special occasion.
This week, the festivities reached a pinnacle at one of the world’s most iconic entertainment venues. The Pokémon Company transformed the Exosphere of Las Vegas’s Sphere into a grand display, illuminating the exterior with a massive red-and-white Poké Ball, followed by animated appearances from beloved Pokémon like Mew, Snorlax, and Charmander.

The takeover, which launched on September 15, was specifically designed as an activation for Pokémon Sleep, the mobile sleep-tracking game that allows players to discover Pokémon based on their sleep patterns. After the Exosphere transformed into the giant Poké Ball, the display transitioned into dreamlike scenes featuring Mew and other Pokémon, inspired by the game’s core concept.
Although the display wasn’t officially part of the broader 30th-anniversary campaign, the timing aligns closely with the franchise’s milestone year. Regardless, it stands out as one of the most visually stunning examples of Pokémon’s presence in major entertainment venues throughout 2026.

The Sphere takeover adds to a growing list of ways Pokémon has made its mark in the real world this year. PokéPark Kanto, touted as the franchise’s first permanent outdoor attraction, opened on February 5 within Yomiuriland in Tokyo’s Tama Hills area, providing fans with a dedicated space centered around the franchise.
Additionally, Pokémon GO has embraced the anniversary with special in-game activities encouraging players to explore their communities, while a series of real-world events called PokéXciting! continues to unfold across the Asia-Pacific region. The Los Angeles concert remains the largest U.S. anniversary event listed on Pokémon’s official 30th-anniversary website.
With video game tie-ins, permanent theme park attractions, trading card releases, and now a massive Las Vegas landmark takeover, Pokémon’s approach to its 30th year has clearly embraced spectacle at every turn. The Sphere activation exemplifies how far the franchise’s reach has extended beyond its original handheld game origins, placing it among the biggest physical showcases in entertainment.
As celebrations continue throughout the year across multiple continents, it’s evident that Pokémon is not slowing down its anniversary momentum anytime soon. Whether through a towering illuminated Poké Ball over the Las Vegas Strip or a new permanent attraction in Tokyo, the franchise consistently finds innovative ways to remind fans of its remarkable journey over three decades.
