‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan‘ has entered its final season, systematically dismantling every relationship and excuse that previously held its main character back from becoming the man fans of ‘Power’ recognize. With each episode, the series intensifies Kanan’s transformation, driven by betrayal, grief, and a family that continually provides him with reasons to harden.

This slow unraveling reaches a critical moment in episode 7, titled “Penultimate Means Second to Last,” where Raq and Marvin find themselves hunted from multiple angles while Kanan and Jukebox make their own strategic moves. The episode picks up following the fallout from episode 6, where Marvin brutally assaulted Kanan after discovering his nephew was responsible for Lou-Lou’s death.

In the episode’s climactic moments, Kanan seeks revenge by confronting Marvin and shooting him inside a church. The order to eliminate both Marvin and Raq reportedly comes from Stefano, Snaps, and Pops, placing Kanan and Breeze in a position to execute it, though only Marvin’s death is confirmed by the episode’s conclusion.

This killing resonates differently compared to Kanan’s previous violent acts this season. His earlier killing of Lou-Lou was portrayed as an accident, and an earlier attempt on Raq’s life showed visible hesitation. In contrast, Marvin’s death lacks any ambiguity, appearing less as a reaction to the beating he endured and more as a cold, calculated execution that reflects Kanan’s chosen path.

This inevitability has been building since episode 5, “School of War,” where the brutal beatdown at the end of that hour all but assured some form of retaliation. Unlike Lou-Lou’s more surprising demise, Marvin’s fate was clearly foreshadowed, indicating that the show was less focused on shocking viewers and more on making the moment feel justified.

Marvin’s death also stands out as one of the more emotionally charged losses of the season, considering his character’s growth. Previously, he was Raq’s loyal follower, always complying despite his complaints. However, this season showcased him pushing back more assertively and sharing hard truths with his sister, rooted in genuine love rather than resentment.

Kanan isn’t the only character embracing a more ruthless side by the episode’s conclusion. Jukebox also exacts her revenge by killing Snaps and Pops in Central Park, eliminating two more players involved in Raq’s operations in one fell swoop.

Raq’s situation continues to deteriorate on multiple fronts. Flossy has already severed ties with her, removing Pino from the equation, and with Marvin now gone, the last ally she had is lost. This leaves the Thomas family vulnerable to anyone still looking to claim a piece of Manhattan’s underworld.

By the episode’s end, Raq is still unaware of Marvin’s death, setting the stage for a heartbreaking revelation as the series approaches its final two hours. With only two episodes remaining before the series concludes, the narrative is clearly gearing up for a direct confrontation between mother and son, one that will eliminate anyone left standing between them.

Kanan is unlikely to meet his end before the story aligns with the character fans are familiar with from ‘Power,’ but episode 7 indicates that many others may not be so fortunate before the finale arrives.
