Streaming cancellations have become a painful reality for fans, particularly when a show’s metrics suggest it deserves a second season. Action comedies are especially vulnerable, often requiring time to cultivate a loyal audience that can sustain a series.

This is the frustration surrounding one of Prime Video’s most talked-about recent releases, a series that initially dominated charts before its abrupt cancellation. The announcement came as a shock to both fans and industry observers.

‘Ride or Die’ has been canceled by Prime Video after just one season, and the series is now being marketed by Paramount TV Studios, Deadline reported. This decision follows the action comedy achieving some of the strongest viewership numbers among new scripted series on Prime Video this year.

Starring Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer, the series follows best friends Debbie Claybourne and Judith Burton after Debbie learns that Judith is secretly an international assassin. When a job goes awry, the duo must escape across Europe, pursued by police, rival assassins, and criminals seeking revenge.

The supporting cast features Ed Skrein, Calam Lynch, Savannah Steyn, Jamie Parker, Jacky Ido, Sylvia Hoeks, and Bill Nighy, creating a diverse ensemble that complements the show’s globe-trotting narrative. All 8 episodes were released together on July 15, allowing fans to binge the entire season.

‘Ride or Die’ didn’t just perform well; it excelled. The series topped Prime Video’s daily US rankings, debuted at No. 8 on Nielsen’s overall streaming chart, and climbed to No. 4 the following week. It ultimately became Prime Video’s most-watched new scripted US series within its first 14 days.

The critical reception mirrored its commercial success, earning a 96% score from critics and an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers lauded it as an engaging, escapist buddy caper, with much of the acclaim directed at the chemistry between its two leads.

Spencer previously shared what attracted her to the project, stating, “I loved that it was centered around two women — two women of a certain age, two brilliant, highly capable women — doing action and comedy,” according to PEOPLE. Waddingham echoed this sentiment, noting her immediate excitement upon reading the pitch.

This shared enthusiasm from both stars played a crucial role in shaping a series that leaned heavily into their dynamic, presenting the show as a modern twist on the buddies-on-the-run genre. With both actresses also serving as executive producers, their creative involvement extended beyond mere acting.

Despite the strong viewership and positive reviews, Prime Video has chosen not to proceed with a second season, leaving Paramount TV Studios to seek other networks and streaming platforms for the series. While this type of arrangement isn’t uncommon, it leaves the show’s future uncertain.

For a series that spent five consecutive weeks in the Top 10 Originals across all streaming platforms, the cancellation has left many fans wondering what more a show must achieve to earn a renewal. During one tracked week in August, the show garnered 506 million viewing minutes, ranking fifth overall among streaming originals during that period.

‘Ride or Die’ joins a growing list of recent streaming cancellations where strong viewership and critical acclaim haven’t guaranteed a second season. This trend has led fans to question the reliability of publicly available metrics, as shows that seem successful by all visible standards can still be cut without much explanation.

With Paramount TV Studios actively seeking new homes for the series, there remains a possibility for ‘Ride or Die’ to continue elsewhere, even as Prime Video has moved on.
