Every major action film needs standout talents, and ‘Street Fighter’ has centered its promotional efforts around a cast featuring real-life fighters. Among them, Rayna Vallandingham stands out as a martial arts champion turned actress, making her debut in a significant blockbuster role.

With the film set to hit theaters on October 16, her press photos have started to circulate widely, enhancing a promotional campaign that heavily leans into arcade nostalgia. Paramount and Legendary have been rolling out trailers, cast appearances, and photocalls for weeks.

On October 5, new studio portraits of Vallandingham for the film’s promotional push were released. In these images, she sports a slate-blue washed-leather top with strap cutouts, her long dark hair styled in loose waves, and a gold hoop earring that catches the light. One photo features her facing the camera directly, while the other captures her glancing over her shoulder against a light backdrop.

While her look is glamorous, Vallandingham’s journey is anything but typical for a red carpet newcomer. Born on January 18, 2003, in Encinitas, California, she began taekwondo at the age of 2 and has amassed 13 American Taekwondo Association world titles, excelling in forms and weaponry like the bo staff and nunchaku.

She is a fourth-degree black belt who made history at age 9 by winning six world titles in a single year. As she told Vogue India, “I was a shy kid, so they put me into martial arts to help me break out of my shell.”

After winning the XMA Forms world championships, she relocated to Los Angeles to pursue acting, landing a role in the martial arts film ‘Underdog Kids.’ She has also appeared in music videos, including Shawn Mendes’ “Youth,” showcasing her skills.

Before this film, Vallandingham’s most significant role was in the final season of ‘Cobra Kai,’ where she made her debut in season 6, part 2, as Zara Malik in 2024. Zara is portrayed as a martial arts influencer and “Queen of Karate” who represents the Hong Kong dojo known as the Iron Dragons.

In ‘Street Fighter,’ Vallandingham takes on the role of Juli, a character who first appeared in ‘Street Fighter Alpha 3.’ Juli is depicted as a German private security officer and assassin working for the villainous M. Bison. Primetimer describes her as being associated with M. Bison’s brainwashed Dolls.

The film is set in 1993, the year ‘Street Fighter II’ took arcades by storm. The story follows estranged fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo), who are recruited by Chun-Li (Callina Liang) for the upcoming World Warrior Tournament.

Directed by Kitao Sakurai, known for ‘Bad Trip’ and ‘The Eric André Show,’ the film features an ensemble cast that includes Jason Momoa as Blanka, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Roman Reigns as Akuma, and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog. Mel Jarnson plays Cammy, while Eric André appears as Don Sauvage.

Vallandingham and Liang have also been featured together in press photos shared by Cinethology, highlighting the cast’s appeal, which relies on actors who can genuinely execute martial arts moves.

Fan reactions to the casting have been mixed since the film’s announcement. However, the first trailer has received praise for its promise of entertaining, lighthearted fun, according to SlashFilm.

This movie marks the first release under Legendary’s distribution agreement with Paramount, making its opening weekend a crucial test for that partnership. It also provides audiences with an opportunity to determine if this is the live-action adaptation the franchise has long awaited.

For Vallandingham, this role could be a significant stepping stone, transforming her from a rising social media and martial arts star into a leading action figure. The press photos are merely a glimpse of her capabilities on screen.
