Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth Share Video Message From the Set of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel’s marketing strategy has been in full swing this month, making a notable stop in China. The studio has dedicated much of the past year to releasing teasers, trailers, and making appearances at conventions for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Recently, however, the tone of their messaging has shifted from mere excitement to a more serious warning aimed at the fandom.
The promotional campaign kicked off in earnest last December with a teaser confirming Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers, followed by a Thor-centric spot the next week, an X-Men reveal in early January, and teasers for Wakanda and the Fantastic Four shortly thereafter. These combined teasers eventually surpassed one billion views, a milestone that Robert Downey Jr. celebrated on Instagram, emphasizing that the film’s scale warrants such attention.
This momentum continued with a new video message released this week. Avengers Updates shared a clip filmed at BilibiliWorld, featuring Downey, Evans, and Chris Hemsworth addressing fans directly.
In recent interviews, Downey has discussed the pressure surrounding this film. Speaking to CBR in early July, he described ‘Doomsday’ as the antidote to Marvel’s post-Endgame slump. He explained that the story’s structure and the characters involved make it feel distinct from previous installments. Downey emphasized that the team has worked diligently to ensure the film does not disappoint following ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame.’
Downey directly acknowledged the challenge, likening the difficulty of following ‘Endgame’ to trying to replicate the original ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. He noted that unique circumstances came together during that time, making it impossible to replicate. Such candidness from the actor most associated with the franchise’s earlier success adds significant weight to the marketing message that the stakes have never been higher.
The focus on China also highlights the increased emphasis on international marketing ahead of the film’s release. Marvel Studios selected the Shanghai Expo as the venue for its first real-world look at physical sets and props from the movie, providing fans there with an early glimpse instead of saving everything for domestic conventions. This hands-on approach, combined with a personal video message from three of the franchise’s most recognizable stars, indicates that Marvel is prioritizing the Chinese market this time around.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and features Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, and a vast ensemble cast that includes the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. The film is set to hit theaters on December 18, and if this week’s message to fans is any indication, the marketing team clearly aims for audiences to expect something unprecedented from the franchise.
