With each new DC movie release, fans often wonder if Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight might ever share the screen with the heroes of the DCU. The idea of a Batman-and-Superman team-up has been a hot topic since the inception of the DCU, and the discussion continues to thrive. Recently, Pattinson himself weighed in on the possibility of such a crossover.

The concept has gained traction, especially after Pattinson’s performance in Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman‘ received widespread acclaim. Meanwhile, David Corenswet’s portrayal of ‘Superman’ marked a promising beginning for James Gunn’s revamped universe. Despite Pattinson’s Batman existing before the DCU, fans are eager to see these two iconic characters meet.

In an exclusive interview with LADbible, Pattinson expressed that it would be “kind of tough to have this version of Bruce outside of that world.” He highlighted the extensive shooting schedules and the immersive style and tone of the film, which makes it challenging to envision the character in a different context. Currently, he is filming ‘The Batman – Part II’.

James Gunn has been somewhat dismissive of the crossover idea. When a fan inquired on Threads about the possibility of bringing Pattinson into the DCU, Gunn simply replied with a “no.” In an interview with ET, he mentioned that while it’s not in the cards at the moment, he hasn’t completely ruled it out.

Gunn has acknowledged that the thought has crossed his mind. On the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, he mentioned that he considers various possibilities but emphasized his desire for the freedom to explore Elseworlds stories. Reeves, on his end, has stated that any crossover would depend on whether it makes narrative sense, as he aims to develop his own epic crime saga.

This rationale aligns with the DC Elseworlds label, which Gunn established for projects that exist outside the primary continuity. Pattinson and Reeves are continuing their Batman narrative under this banner, while Gunn and Safran are casting a different Batman for the DCU.

The DCU version of Batman is already evolving into a distinct character. He is set to appear in ‘The Brave and the Bold’, a film directed by Andy Muschietti, featuring a Bat-family that includes multiple Robins. Den of Geek has noted that this Batman is mature enough to have a son who is also a hero, contrasting with Reeves’ portrayal, which takes place during the Caped Crusader’s second year.

Gunn has also clarified that the DCU Batman will not be a comedic or campy interpretation. The differences between the two portrayals are evident; a Batman collaborating with a Robin in a world filled with metahumans starkly contrasts with Pattinson’s brooding detective in a realistic Gotham.

‘The Batman Part II’ has faced a lengthy journey. Initially set for release on October 2, 2026, it was later pushed to October 1, 2027, and Reeves has now announced a new release date of February 18, 2028. This extension allows the director more time for post-production, nearly six years after the first film debuted in March 2022.

Reeves shared the new date alongside the first camera test footage featuring Pattinson’s return. The cast also includes Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch, with Reeves co-writing alongside Mattson Tomlin. Gunn defended the extended timeline, noting that a gap of five years or more between sequels is quite common.

Meanwhile, the DCU continues to progress. The next film in its Chapter One is ‘Clayface’, a body-horror movie set to hit theaters on October 23. This variety of tones illustrates why Gunn seeks a Batman who can seamlessly integrate into his universe.
