It’s been seven years since The X-Files revival ended on Fox, but the popular sci-fi series is getting a fresh reboot. And this time, it’s coming from Ryan Coogler — the filmmaker behind Black Panther, Creed, and Sinners.

Coogler recently gave an exciting update about the project on Last Podcast on the Left. He said he’s putting a lot of effort into making the new X-Files something special for both old and new fans.

“I’m working on X-Files, bro. That’s what’s immediately next,” Coogler said. “I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f**ing scary.”*

“We’re gonna try to make something really great, bro, and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones.”

The X-Files first aired in 1993 and ran until 2002. It had two more revival seasons and a few movies. The show starred David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully — two FBI agents who investigated strange and paranormal cases. Mulder believed in aliens and the unknown, while Scully was a scientist and a skeptic.

Chris Carter, who created the original show, is not directing the reboot, but he has given Coogler his full support.

I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing,” Carter said.

Coogler also shared that he’s spoken to Gillian Anderson, who played Dana Scully for 11 seasons.

“I’ve spoken to the great Gillian Anderson. She’s amazing. She’s incredible. You know, fingers crossed there.”

There’s no official cast yet, but Carter mentioned earlier that Coogler plans to bring in a diverse group of actors for the reboot. Now that Coogler has confirmed The X-Files is his next big project, more details should be coming soon.

Fans of the original series and new viewers can get excited. With Coogler at the helm and possible appearances from classic characters, this reboot could be something truly special.
