Ryan Coogler’s Reported Storm Casting Could Change ‘Black Panther 3’ Significantly
Marvel’s mutant reboot has been making waves with numerous casting headlines, but the latest news has taken fans by surprise. Instead of emerging through the typical X-Men rumor channels, this update is closely linked to one of the studio’s other major franchises.
This connection revolves around ‘Black Panther 3,’ the eagerly anticipated third installment directed by Ryan Coogler, who is returning to the franchise following 2025’s ‘Sinners,’ with Letitia Wright reprising her role. What began as a film focused on Wakanda’s future has now intertwined with Marvel’s broader mutant strategy.
According to insider Main Middle Man, Coogler is reportedly involved in casting Storm, with the character expected to appear in ‘Black Panther 3’ instead of the standalone ‘X-Men’ film currently in development. The report suggests that Storm will showcase her full powers, being described as the most powerful mutant in the MCU after Jean Grey.
This aligns with a broader pattern Marvel seems to be adopting for its mutant rollout. The strategy mirrors how ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ quietly introduced Sadie Sink as Jean Grey ahead of her larger role in the upcoming ‘X-Men’ film, indicating that Storm’s debut in ‘Black Panther 3’ could serve a similar purpose, integrating a major mutant character into an established franchise before her story expands further.
The link between Storm and Black Panther’s universe is not merely a marketing tactic. In the comics, Ororo Munroe has deep ties to Africa, being the daughter of a Kenyan princess descended from a line of witch priestesses. Her storyline has even included a marriage to T’Challa, providing a natural reason for her to connect with the Wakandan side of the MCU.
However, this comic book history complicates matters given the current state of the franchise. With T’Challa having passed away and his son with Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o, now stepping into the Black Panther role following David Jonsson’s casting reveal at Comic-Con, any storyline involving a marriage between Storm and the previous Black Panther seems unlikely to be directly carried over.
Speculation about who might portray Storm has been intensifying for weeks, regardless of which film she ultimately appears in. Names like Jodie Turner-Smith, Anna Diop, KiKi Layne, Cynthia Erivo, and Jayme Lawson have all been mentioned, with several sources pointing specifically to Lawson due to her age aligning with Marvel’s reported push for a younger X-Men cast and her previous collaboration with Coogler on ‘Sinners.’
As with most Marvel casting rumors at this stage, none of this has been officially confirmed by the studio, and everything currently circulating should be viewed as industry speculation rather than established fact. However, having a high-profile director like Coogler reportedly overseeing the casting process adds more credibility to the rumor than many of the names floating around the broader X-Men rumor mill.
With ‘Black Panther 3’ now set for a December 15, 2028 release and Marvel’s expanded X-Men roster expected to be revealed at this month’s D23 event, fans may not have to wait long to discover whether Storm’s live-action debut truly occurs in Wakanda instead of alongside her fellow mutants.
