Sadie Sink Is Marvel’s Jean Grey Following Her ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Debut
Sadie Sink has had an eventful summer, especially after spending over a year keeping her latest role under wraps. The ‘Stranger Things’ star has made headlines with a record-breaking box office debut and a significant announcement at D23, marking a pivotal moment in her career that few young actors experience.
Her entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe was shrouded in secrecy, with her role being so confidential that even those close to her were unaware. It wasn’t until ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ premiered that fans finally grasped the extent of her hidden project.
The revelation has now expanded, as Marvel Studios confirmed at D23 that Sadie Sink will reprise her role as Jean Grey in the upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot, extending her mutant storyline beyond her surprising debut earlier this summer.
“It is so wonderful to be here and to finally be able to talk about this character after months of speculation,” Sink expressed during the D23 panel, welcoming her new co-stars on stage. This moment was particularly special for an actress who had kept her casting a secret even from friends and family.
Sink’s path to becoming Jean Grey was not straightforward. Reflecting on her casting for ‘Brand New Day’, she shared that Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito personally reached out to her, despite her initial unfamiliarity with the character.
That unfamiliarity quickly faded. Sink mentioned to Variety that once she began her research on Jean Grey, accepting the role became a “no-brainer,” as she was drawn to the character’s iconic status in X-Men lore and eager to present her own interpretation.
What makes Sink’s portrayal of Jean particularly intriguing is the emotional depth established in ‘Brand New Day’. She described Jean as “very flawed,” emphasizing that while the character aims to avoid causing harm, her own past traumas significantly influence her actions. This backstory, which includes the loss of Jean’s sister and a pivotal reveal involving the enigmatic “V-Max” clue, provides a strong emotional foundation for the ensemble film.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has surpassed $500 million at the North American box office, achieving this milestone in record time and heightening anticipation for Sink’s future as Jean Grey. With that pressure now lifted, Sink seems poised to take the character into Marvel’s next chapter.
In the new ‘X-Men’ film, Sink will be joined by Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm, with Adam Driver portraying the villain Mister Sinister. Director Jake Schreier, known for his work on ‘Thunderbolts’, will guide the ensemble through production.
Although Sink has yet to meet all her new castmates, her enthusiasm for the journey ahead is clear. She has expressed that the “flawed” nature of X-Men characters, who often grapple with powers they never sought, is precisely what makes the source material so captivating to explore on screen.
With ‘X-Men’ scheduled for a May 5, 2028 release, fans have a long wait ahead before they can see Sink’s portrayal of Jean Grey alongside the rest of the mutant ensemble.
