Sam Heughan is finally opening up about the poignant conclusion of Outlander. According to the actor, he still has questions regarding the events of the final scene.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Heughan shared insights about Jamie Fraser’s fate, revealing that he has known the ending of Diana Gabaldon’s final Outlander book since the series began.

The last episode of the Starz drama sparked discussions among fans about whether Jamie and Claire survived or if they transitioned to another realm after the Battle of Kings Mountain. The finale depicted Jamie appearing to die in battle before the narrative took a more enigmatic and spiritual turn.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Heughan admitted that watching the finale was an emotional experience for him, especially since filming wrapped over a year ago. “It’s been a very emotional week,” he said. “It is really one long goodbye. Each character gets their moment, and the final moment itself was definitely a surprise for all of us.”

Throughout the finale, Jamie prepared for what seemed like his last battle. Heughan explained that the character had come to terms with death long before the final episode. Jamie’s journey throughout the series has shaped his perspective on mortality.

“He says that he’s not afraid to die. He’s just afraid to leave the people that he loves,” Heughan elaborated. He also noted that Jamie has always felt a connection to something beyond the physical realm, particularly after everything he experienced with Claire.

One of the most significant moments in the finale featured ghost Jamie, which harkened back to the first season of Outlander. Heughan expressed that he was eager to incorporate the ghost storyline into the conclusion.

“That, for me, was key,” he stated. “I really wanted to do it.” He added that filming those scenes was special as it allowed him to revisit Jamie’s original Season 1 appearance and reconnect with the story’s beginning.

Even now, Heughan believes the ending remains open to interpretation. He feels that fans can determine for themselves whether Jamie and Claire are alive or if they have moved on together into another world.

“Are they alive in this world or in the next? I’d like to believe that they’re alive together,” he shared. He also hinted that Claire’s mysterious healing abilities may have influenced the events of the finale.

In a surprising revelation during the interview, Heughan confirmed that he knows how Diana Gabaldon intends to conclude the final Outlander novel, even though the book has yet to be released. Heughan stated that Gabaldon shared the last pages with him and executive producer Maril Davis before filming for Season 1 began.

“Diana sent it to us before we started Season 1,” Heughan revealed. “She sent us the last few pages, so we know the ending.”

Outlander first premiered in 2014 and quickly became one of Starz’s flagship shows. Based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novels, the series chronicles the adventures of Claire Fraser, a nurse from the 1940s who mysteriously travels back in time and falls in love with Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser. Over eight seasons, the show has blended romance, war, history, fantasy, and time travel into one of television’s most beloved dramas.

Fans are eagerly awaiting Gabaldon’s final Outlander book, which will officially conclude the saga that began over three decades ago.
