D23 has a unique ability to transform even the most casual moments into significant fan experiences, particularly when a newly formed cast is getting acquainted in real time. For Marvel’s upcoming ‘X-Men’ ensemble, this year’s convention provided just that kind of behind-the-scenes insight, showcasing the cast bonding away from the main stage’s spotlight.

This unscripted energy has been part of the narrative since the casting process began. Kevin Feige mentioned during the official reveal that many of these actors were meeting for the first time backstage at D23, making the entire rollout feel less like a polished press tour and more like a genuine introduction among future co-stars.

Fan-captured footage from the event showcased Samara Weaving, who portrays Emma Frost, mingling with the new ‘X-Men‘ cast backstage after their big group reveal. This candid moment quickly spread online, offering fans a rare, unfiltered glimpse at the chemistry developing among the ensemble before filming officially begins.

Weaving’s casting as Emma Frost was confirmed prior to D23, with Deadline first reporting that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier selected the Australian actress after meeting with several candidates for the role. The studio did not officially comment on the news at that time, leaving Weaving’s casting as one of the few details fans knew leading up to the full reveal.

Weaving brings a wealth of genre and horror-comedy experience to the role, having gained recognition with her performance in 2019’s ‘Ready or Not’, which established her as one of Hollywood’s rising scream queens. Her earlier work includes ‘Mayhem’ and ‘The Babysitter’, both released in 2017, along with an ensemble role in ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’.

In the comics, Emma Frost has one of the more intricate character arcs among the X-Men, transitioning from supervillain to superhero throughout her decades-long history. Her telepathic powers have made her one of the franchise’s most formidable mutants, previously portrayed on screen by Tahyna Tozzi in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ and January Jones in ‘X-Men: First Class’.

Weaving joins a rapidly growing roster that features Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver completes the group in a villainous role as Nathaniel Milbury, an alias for the comics’ Mister Sinister.

Driver’s own reveal added a memorable touch to the evening, delivered through a surprise video message from Pinewood Studios rather than in person. “Kevin and I have been discussing for years about possibly joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” Driver stated during the reveal, humorously teasing a Magneto casting before correcting himself with his actual role.

Feige emphasized during the panel that this was not the complete cast list, hinting that additional casting announcements are forthcoming as the ‘X-Men’ roster continues to evolve. Director Jake Schreier, known for his work on ‘Thunderbolts’, is set to lead the ensemble when the film hits theaters on May 5, 2028.

Fan reactions to the backstage footage have been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing excitement over witnessing genuine camaraderie forming among the cast so early in the process. For a franchise steeped in fan anticipation, these small, unscripted moments have quickly become just as newsworthy as the official announcements themselves.
