Nick Fury has been a vital part of the MCU since its inception. Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic character made his debut in the post-credits scene of ‘Iron Man’ in 2008 and played a crucial role in assembling the Avengers. However, fans have been wondering about his whereabouts for quite some time.

Fury has been noticeably absent from the main Avengers films since ‘Age of Ultron’. He took a prominent role in ‘Secret Invasion’ and ‘The Marvels’, but his last appearance left him on Earth with the Khan family after his stint with S.A.B.E.R. With a new crossover approaching, speculation about his return has intensified.

Recently, Jackson provided clarity on the situation. In an interview with The Direct during the red carpet event for ‘The Beast’, he confirmed that Fury will not appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ but will make his comeback in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. When asked about his absence, Jackson hinted at “the movie after this one.”

Jackson mentioned that he is unaware of the plot details for ‘Secret Wars’, as Marvel has only informed him that he will not be in the next film but will be in the one following it.

This announcement clears up some confusion. Insider Alex Perez had previously suggested that Jackson would return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, but his recent comments contradict that claim. Additionally, Jackson was not included in the cast announcement for ‘Doomsday’ in March, which fueled further speculation.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to premiere on December 18, directed by the Russo brothers, with Robert Downey Jr. portraying Doctor Doom. Following that, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. Jackson’s timeline indicates that Fury will be held back for the latter part of the crossover.

Since Jackson claims he knows nothing about the storyline, his role remains uncertain. Screen Rant highlights that it’s unclear whether Fury will have a supporting role, similar to his appearances in the first two ‘Avengers’ films, or a cameo like in ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’. ‘Secret Wars’ will mark Jackson’s 13th MCU movie and his 16th project overall, including his roles in three TV shows.

Collider notes that his casting does not confirm the rumored Battleworld storyline for the film. The Direct speculates that Fury could take on a pivotal role, organizing survivors and coordinating efforts, which would be fitting for the character who initiated it all.

There are also questions about which other characters will appear. Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel has not been confirmed for ‘Doomsday’ and may be one of several actors sitting out that film before returning for ‘Secret Wars’. The Direct argues that it would make sense for Carol Danvers to come back, given her close connection to Fury.

Jackson is among a growing list of confirmed cast members for ‘Secret Wars’. Screen Rant reports that Anthony Mackie, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Chris Evans, and Simu Liu are also set to appear in ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’. The film is Marvel Studios’ only planned release for 2027 and will conclude the Multiverse Saga.

However, there is a potential complication. ComicBook.com recently reported that the film’s shooting schedule has been delayed, which could mean a longer wait to see Fury back in action, even though the release date remains December 17, 2027.

For longtime fans, this news presents a mixed bag. While Fury won’t be present when the heroes first confront Doctor Doom, his anticipated return means the architect of the Avengers will be back for the saga’s conclusion. Jackson has expressed for years that he will continue to return as long as Marvel keeps calling, and this confirmation indicates that the phone is still ringing.
