Sarah Michelle Gellar is honoring Dolly Parton, who passed away on Tuesday at age 80, by reflecting on a lesser-known aspect of Parton’s career: her behind-the-scenes contributions to ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’

Although Parton was never officially credited as a producer, her production company, Sandollar Productions, co-founded with former manager Sandy Gallin, was acknowledged in the end credits throughout all seven seasons. Sandollar played a pivotal role in bringing ‘Buffy’ to life after producing the original 1992 film featuring Kristy Swanson, and it continued to co-produce both ‘Buffy’ and its spinoff series ‘Angel.’

Gellar, who portrayed Buffy Summers from 1997 to 2003, shared a clip of Parton discussing her involvement with the series during a 2021 appearance on Andy Cohen’s “Watch What Happens Live.” In the clip, Parton referred to ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ as “a wonderful little show.” Gellar expressed her admiration in her tribute post, stating: “Just being a small part of the great history of [Dolly Parton] is everything to me.”

Gellar has previously discussed Parton’s influence on the production, describing her as a largely unseen but generous presence during the show’s formative years. In a 2023 appearance on “The Tonight Show,” Gellar told Jimmy Fallon that the cast received Christmas gifts with Parton’s name attached but never met her directly, humorously noting that she thought, “she doesn’t know who I am.” Gellar later discovered that this assumption was incorrect: after hearing Parton commend both the show and her performance, Gellar recalled feeling, “I can die now. Dolly Parton knows who I am and thinks I’m good.”

Parton’s support extended beyond the cast. Former Sandollar executive Gail Berman revealed to the New York Times in 2016 that Parton provided her with an additional paycheck after learning she was earning less than her male colleagues while working on ‘Buffy,’ showcasing Parton’s early advocacy for women in the industry.

Sandollar’s television division, co-founded by Parton and Gallin in 1986, has also contributed to other notable projects over the years, including the 1991 film ‘Father of the Bride.’ However, its connection to the ‘Buffyverse’ stands out as one of the more unexpected highlights in Parton’s extensive career, especially considering how distinct the gothic teen drama is from her country music origins.

Parton reportedly maintained a loose connection to ‘Buffy’ well after its original airing, staying involved in discussions about a potential revival of the franchise in recent years. For Gellar and the show’s fans, this quiet, enduring support is a significant part of how Parton is being remembered this week, alongside her vast legacy.
