Superhero sequels typically don’t take six years to hit the big screen, but ‘The Batman: Part II‘ has certainly defied the norm with its production timeline. Robert Pattinson first donned the cape in 2022, and since then, fans have watched as release dates shifted and cast announcements trickled in, all while Matt Reeves aimed to create a sequel that could surpass his acclaimed original.

The long wait finally transitioned into action this past June when production commenced in London, with Pattinson reprising his role alongside an expanded cast. Colin Farrell returns as Oz Cobb, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, joined by newcomers Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance, and Sebastian Koch, forming a genuinely impressive new lineup.

However, one of the most closely guarded secrets of the production isn’t the plot but rather the identities of Johansson and Stan’s characters. According to Variety, Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan’s roles in ‘The Batman: Part II’ remain a mystery, even as fan speculation has run rampant since their casting was announced.

Amid the intrigue surrounding his new co-stars, Pattinson also celebrated a personal milestone during filming, turning 40 years old while shooting this physically demanding sequel. In an interview with GQ, Pattinson described the shoot as a “marathon,” praising the ensemble for being genuinely enjoyable to work with despite the intense pace.

This physical toll aligns with the evolving context of this particular Batman narrative. The original 2022 film showcased Bruce Wayne as a younger, still-developing vigilante finding his footing in Gotham. However, the nearly six-year gap between films means Pattinson is now noticeably older as he tackles the same demanding stunts and fight sequences that defined his first outing.

The secrecy surrounding Johansson and Stan’s characters hasn’t deterred fans from crafting elaborate theories in the meantime. One persistent rumor suggests Stan may portray Harvey Dent, Gotham’s district attorney who ultimately becomes Two-Face in the comics, with Johansson potentially cast as his wife, Gilda Dent. However, neither casting has been officially confirmed by Reeves or the studio.

Given the relatively close ages of Stan and Pattinson in real life, some fans speculate that Stan could be playing Tommy Elliot, the villain known as Hush. This theory points to groundwork laid in the first film and HBO’s ‘The Penguin’ regarding the Elliot family’s connections to Gotham’s criminal underworld. Without official confirmation, both theories remain speculative, maintaining the mystery as production continues.

With ‘The Batman: Part II’ now set for a February 18, 2028 release, nearly six years after the original premiered, Reeves has more room than most franchise sequels to fully realize his vision for this next chapter. Set against a wintry, flooded Gotham City, the sequel’s broader scope and deliberately guarded plot details suggest Reeves is once again striving to avoid the predictable pitfalls of superhero sequels.

Whether Johansson and Stan’s characters turn out to be iconic Batman villains or something entirely unexpected, the studio’s tight-lipped strategy has clearly succeeded in keeping fans engaged long before the film even arrives in theaters.
