Scott Patterson Shares He Never Watched ‘Gilmore Girls’ While Filming
Scott Patterson recently opened up about his experience on ‘Gilmore Girls’, revealing that he never watched the show during its filming or its original broadcast. In a recent interview on FOX 29’s late-night show ‘MIKE’ with Mike Jerrick, Patterson explained that the long filming days and sheer exhaustion contributed to his decision to avoid watching the series at that time.
He remarked, “Because I made the sausage for 14 hours a day, I didn’t want to eat it. I just was not interested in consuming it after I did it for so long. When you’re on a TV series, you barely have time to eat, sleep or take a shower.”
Patterson portrayed Luke Danes, the diner owner in Stars Hollow and Lorelai Gilmore’s love interest, played by Lauren Graham. The show ran from 2000 to 2007 and became a beloved classic over its seven seasons.
Despite spending years on set, Patterson admitted he did not engage with the show as a viewer during that period. It wasn’t until many years later that he revisited it.
In 2021, he launched a podcast titled ‘I Am All In with Scott Patterson’, where he watched ‘Gilmore Girls’ for the first time and discussed each episode. The idea emerged after he struck a deal with iHeartRadio, despite not having seen the complete series before.
He shared during the interview, “I called iHeart, made a deal and that was my pitch. I had never seen the episodes. They said ‘Really?’ They felt sorry for me, so they gave me a show because they felt bad for me.”
Once he finally watched the show for his podcast, his perspective shifted dramatically. He found himself enjoying it far more than he had anticipated.
“I understood what the fans were talking about. It’s funny, it’s endearing, it’s sweet, it’s unusual, it’s abstract, it’s experimental,” Patterson noted.
He also praised the show’s creators, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, calling them original and creative forces in television. He credited their unique backgrounds and styles for shaping the series’ distinctive tone.
Patterson commended Lauren Graham’s performance, likening her character’s energy and humor to that of a stage comedian in a small town. He described Luke as a steady presence, providing a grounded contrast to Lorelai’s fast-paced, joke-laden personality.
He further observed that part of the show’s enduring appeal lies in how viewers’ perspectives evolve over time. Those who watched it as teenagers often see it differently when they revisit it as adults, which explains why many fans continue to rewatch it.
The series also featured Alexis Bledel, Jared Padalecki, Milo Ventimiglia, Melissa McCarthy, Kelly Bishop, and Edward Herrmann, among others.
This insight comes from Patterson’s interview on FOX 29’s ‘MIKE’ with Mike Jerrick, as well as his previous comments made on his podcast and other interviews.
Overall, Patterson now reflects on the show with a newfound appreciation, despite not experiencing it as a viewer during its initial run. This situation highlights the intriguing contrast between an actor’s experience and that of the audience. While he was busy working long hours, fans were enjoying the finished product at home. It’s understandable that he only connected with the show later, once he had the time and distance to appreciate it. What are your thoughts on actors not watching their own shows while filming?
