Superhero franchises often have abandoned plans, but few stories resonate as deeply as those of actors who nearly landed significant comic book roles only to see them disappear before release. This was the case for Shailene Woodley over a decade ago, when her portrayal of one of Spider-Man’s most iconic love interests never made it past the editing room.

At the time, Woodley was enjoying a surge in her career, having secured breakout roles that would shape her future. She was cast as Mary Jane Watson opposite Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ This casting seemed logical, especially after Kirsten Dunst’s memorable portrayal in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, while director Marc Webb’s reboot had focused on Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy as Peter’s main love interest.

Now, more than ten years after the film’s release, Woodley is finally shedding light on why her scenes were ultimately cut. In a conversation with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation for a career retrospective, she revealed that the filmmakers intended to delay Mary Jane’s introduction until after Gwen Stacy’s death in the franchise’s overarching narrative. She recalled being informed, “They were like, ‘We’ve introduced a lot of new characters in this last one…’ ‘Let’s wait for [Gwen] to die, and then we’ll introduce Mary Jane,’ which made sense. But then they didn’t make [TASM3].”

This explanation aligns with what director Marc Webb has publicly stated over the years regarding the decision. Woodley filmed only a few scenes alongside Garfield, reportedly working just a few days on set, before Webb ultimately decided the film should remain tightly focused on Peter and Gwen’s relationship rather than introducing a new romantic angle too soon.

The plan was always for Mary Jane to be properly introduced in a planned third ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ film, allowing her storyline to develop once Gwen’s arc concluded. Unfortunately, that third installment never materialized, effectively ending Mary Jane’s involvement in the franchise before it truly began.

Woodley’s comments provide closure on a narrative that had mostly existed as industry speculation for over a decade, confirming that the decision was not personal but rather a structural choice tied to the franchise’s broader, ultimately unrealized roadmap. It serves as a reminder of how many elements must align for a multi-film superhero plan to succeed and how quickly those plans can unravel when a franchise loses momentum.

The timing adds an intriguing layer of what-ifs to the narrative, especially considering how differently things unfolded for Garfield’s version of Peter Parker. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ later brought Garfield’s Spider-Man back into the multiverse spotlight, hinting at the fact that his version of Peter had never quite established a proper relationship, making Woodley’s cut storyline feel like an even greater missed opportunity in retrospect.

As Woodley has since carved out a distinct career path through prestigious television and acclaimed dramas, her brief encounter with the Spider-Man franchise remains one of Hollywood’s genuine curiosities, a role that fans got just enough of a glimpse of to ponder what might have been.
