Marvel star Simu Liu prepares for his stage debut in the hit comedy ‘Oh, Mary!’. The actor takes over the role of Mary’s Teacher in Cole Escola’s acclaimed play. Liu follows previous performers including Cheyenne Jackson, Michael Urie, and originator James Scully.

The production continues its extended run at the Lyceum Theatre. Escola stars as Mary Todd Lincoln in the absurdist historical farce. The show earned Tony Awards recognition earlier in 2025, including for Escola’s lead performance.

Liu gained prominence through ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He recently appeared in projects including ‘Jackpot!’ and voiced roles in animation. This marks his first Broadway credit.

‘Oh, Mary!’ opened in July 2025 after an off-Broadway transfer. The play reimagines events around Abraham Lincoln’s assassination with camp humor. It features Mary’s attempts to pursue cabaret ambitions amid White House chaos.

The casting continues the production’s tradition of high-profile guest stars in supporting roles. Producers include Kevin McCollum and Lucas McMahon. The creative team maintains the original off-Broadway vision.

Liu’s involvement aligns with increasing crossover between film actors and theater. Recent Broadway revivals and new works have drawn similar talent. The role requires comedic timing and physical presence.

No specific start date for Liu’s run has been announced. Tickets remain in demand for the limited engagement. The play has extended multiple times due to box office success.

Escola wrote and stars in the production. Direction comes from Sam Pinkleton. The ensemble includes Conrad Ricamora as Mary’s Husband and Bianca Leigh as Mary’s Chaperone.

This debut adds to Liu’s diverse portfolio beyond action franchises. He previously expressed interest in stage work during interviews. The opportunity follows the play’s cultural impact in 2025 theater seasons.
