Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller ‘Sinners’ cemented its status as a leading awards season contender by dominating the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards. The Warner Bros. release secured eight major victories, overwhelming the field in the organization’s 17th annual voting results announced on Tuesday. The film’s commanding performance across multiple top categories highlights its critical resonance ahead of the broader awards circuit.

‘Sinners’ claimed the organization’s highest honor, winning Best Picture, while Coogler earned dual recognition for Best Director and Best Writing. The film’s lead, Michael B. Jordan, took home Best Actor for his portrayal of dual characters returning to a segregated southern town. The production’s acclaim extended to the supporting cast, with Wunmi Mosaku winning Best Supporting Actress and the entire cast receiving the Best Ensemble award.

Composer Ludwig Göransson was recognized with the award for Best Music, further solidifying the film’s technical achievements. Newcomer Miles Caton also contributed to the film’s haul, winning the Emerging Face (Actor) award. AAFCA President Gil Robertson praised the year’s selections, noting that the winners represent storytellers who challenge and inspire audiences while pushing the art form forward.

While ‘Sinners’ led the pack, other major titles received key acknowledgments. Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another’ saw Chase Infiniti win the Emerging Face (Actress) award. Tessa Thompson secured Best Actress for her role in the period drama ‘Hedda’, and Damson Idris won Best Supporting Actor for ‘F1’.

Netflix’s ‘The Perfect Neighbor’ won Best Documentary, and ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ was named Best Animated Feature. The AAFCA members, representing over 100 critics nationwide, will honor these winners at an in-person ceremony on February 8 in Beverly Hills.
