‘South Park’ Season 29 Premiere Sees Huge Ratings Boost After Bold Name Change
Few shows have maintained cultural relevance for nearly three decades like ‘South Park,’ consistently finding innovative ways to satirize whatever is trending in the news. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have built a brand around their ability to time their satire for maximum impact, often within days of the headlines they are parodying.
This instinct was prominently displayed as the show launched into its 29th season, with the creators executing one of their most audacious stunts just before the premiere. Instead of simply returning with new episodes, they opted for something far more eye-catching.
That gamble has indeed paid off. The Season 29 premiere, which aired under the cheeky new title ‘South America,’ attracted 4.2 million viewers across Comedy Central and Paramount+ within its first three days, according to Variety, marking a significant ratings victory for the long-running animated series.
The renaming was announced just days before the premiere, with Parker and Stone framing it as a satirical response to the Trump administration’s push to rename various U.S. landmarks. “Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation,” the creators stated.
While the overall viewership figure was slightly below Season 28’s three-day total of 4.3 million, the premiere saw significant gains in key demographics. Among adults aged 18 to 49, the episode achieved a 0.97 rating after three days, a 33% increase from Season 28’s 0.73 rating, with its audience share rising to 4.77 from 3.96 the previous year.
This performance made ‘South America’ the most-watched cable telecast of the week among adults 18 to 49, excluding sports programming, a remarkable feat given the fragmented nature of television viewership today. The premiere also sparked considerable online discussion, ranking as the number one most social cable comedy on its debut day.
Social engagement metrics further supported this momentum. The episode garnered 11 million views and 1 million engagements across social media platforms within three days, along with 63,000 online mentions, representing a 40% increase compared to Season 28’s premiere in the same timeframe.

Titled “South American Biker Gangs,” the premiere episode adopted a noticeably different tone compared to the overtly political content that characterized much of Season 28. The storyline revolved around the show’s core kids embracing the e-bike trend, while Randy Marsh led a group of cyclists determined to halt it.
This shift towards classic-style humor seems to have resonated well with fans, who responded positively to the return of a more traditional ‘South Park’ storyline, a significant change after seasons that heavily focused on direct political commentary. The episode premiered shortly after the show’s Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program, adding extra anticipation to how Parker and Stone would follow up that recognition.

The name change remains a satirical gesture rather than a permanent rebranding, with the show continuing to air under its original title in official contexts, even as its promotional materials and opening credits embraced the joke. Whether Parker and Stone will continue to lean into the “South America” branding for the rest of the season is yet to be seen, but the ratings indicate that the stunt successfully generated buzz.
For a series entering its 29th season, achieving these numbers is no small feat, demonstrating that ‘South Park’ still knows how to capture attention when it counts.
