‘Spider-Man’ and ‘The Odyssey’ Drive UK Box Office to Best August Since 2018
Record-breaking summers often vary across different markets, but this blockbuster season has shown remarkable consistency on both sides of the Atlantic. What began as a domestic box office sensation in the United States has now yielded equally historic results in the United Kingdom.
The UK box office has enjoyed a summer surge, propelled by two of the year’s most significant theatrical releases. Both films have dominated the box office weekend after weekend since their respective launches in July, leading to one of the strongest monthly totals the UK market has experienced in nearly a decade.
According to new data from Rentrak, the UK box office amassed $161.3 million in August, marking the best performance for the month since 2018’s record-breaking total of $201.7 million. This impressive achievement is largely attributed to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey,’ which consistently held the top two positions at the UK box office throughout the month.
‘The Odyssey,’ which premiered in the UK on July 17, concluded August with local earnings of $108.6 million, making it Christopher Nolan’s most successful film in the UK by a significant margin. The film maintained its position as the No. 2 title at the box office even seven weeks post-release, showcasing remarkable staying power for a film this far into its theatrical run.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has outperformed even more impressively, securing the No. 1 spot at the UK box office for five consecutive weekends since its July 29 release. The film wrapped up August with total UK earnings of $126.8 million, putting it on track to surpass ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s’ $131.7 million total and potentially become the highest-grossing Marvel film in UK box office history by the end of September.

These two films have not only dominated the UK market individually but have also contributed to significant milestones across various territories this summer. Their success helped the United States surpass the $4 billion domestic box office threshold by August 10, marking only the second time this benchmark has been achieved in the post-pandemic era.
Earlier in their runs, these films also combined to create the largest collective weekend in box office history, generating approximately $430 million across all films in the marketplace during one particularly explosive frame. This achievement surpassed previous record holders, including 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ weekend and 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ opening, highlighting the uniqueness of this box office moment.

The films’ sustained success can be attributed to their strong critical and audience reception, which has maintained momentum well beyond their opening weekends. ‘Brand New Day’ boasts a 90 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” grade on CinemaScore exit polls, positioning it to continue dominating theaters throughout the late summer stretch rather than fading quickly after its debut.
This blend of critical acclaim and sustained box office performance has allowed both films to hold their positions in UK theaters for weeks longer than most typical blockbuster releases, directly contributing to August’s unusually strong overall total. With both films still actively screening in UK theaters as September begins, their combined box office totals show no signs of slowing down.
