The domestic box office is experiencing a phenomenon not seen in over a decade. While Hollywood has produced numerous blockbusters, only a select few have managed to generate the kind of relentless momentum necessary to challenge the industry’s most formidable records.

Typically, such momentum wanes quickly, with even the largest openers losing traction within weeks. However, one film has consistently added to its total week after week, showing no signs of slowing down despite the arrival of new competitors in theaters.

Recent updates indicate that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ garnered $71 million during its third weekend, achieving the largest non-holiday-boosted third weekend in box office history. This figure reflects a mere 50.8% drop from the previous weekend, a significantly softer decline compared to other blockbusters like ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which saw a 57.1% drop, or ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which fell by 44.5%.

Currently, the film’s domestic total stands at $786.8 million after just fifteen days in theaters, placing it $63 million ahead of where ‘Avengers: Endgame’ was at the same point in its run, despite having opened just $3 million ahead of it. This growing gap emphasizes the film’s remarkably strong hold compared to previous record-holders.

Among the largest third three-day weekends in domestic history, only ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ surpasses ‘Brand New Day’ with a holiday-boosted $90.2 million. Following Spider-Man’s $71 million are ‘Avatar’ with $68.5 million and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ at $67.4 million, both also benefiting from holiday boosts, and ‘Black Panther’ at $66.3 million.

With projections indicating that the film will cross the $800 million mark domestically by Tuesday, and $900 million now looking assured, estimates suggest a final domestic total between $910 million and $960 million. This would make ‘Brand New Day’ only the second film in history to surpass $900 million domestically, and it could potentially overtake ‘The Force Awakens,’ which has held the title of highest-grossing film of all time in the U.S. for eleven years.

The film’s impressive staying power has also propelled it up the all-time global rankings, having already surpassed the $2 billion worldwide mark earlier in its run, a milestone achieved faster than all but one film in box office history. Analysts attribute this success to unusually strong repeat viewership, which has contributed to the film’s ability to maintain its momentum week after week, rather than the typical front-loaded openings that characterize most blockbusters.

For Sony and Marvel, these figures signify a rare box office event that goes beyond the usual superhero movie performance, placing ‘Brand New Day’ among a select few films that have genuinely threatened Hollywood’s most historic records. Whether it ultimately surpasses ‘The Force Awakens’ remains uncertain, but the current pace suggests that the record could indeed be within reach by the time the film’s theatrical run concludes.

With domestic audiences continuing to show up in large numbers and international figures rising alongside them, ‘Brand New Day’ shows no signs of the typical late-summer box office decline. If the current trajectory continues, this could be remembered as one of the most historic theatrical runs in modern box office history.
