Box office milestones have been rapidly achieved throughout 2026, but one film has truly distinguished itself in a year filled with blockbuster surprises. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ spent its opening weekend defying expectations, and its momentum shows no signs of slowing down.

Sony and Marvel’s latest web-slinging adventure debuted with approximately $360 million domestically, narrowly surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for the largest North American opening weekend ever recorded. Typically, such a debut fades quickly once the initial excitement wanes, but ‘Brand New Day’ has done the opposite, transforming its massive opening into sustained, week-over-week success.

This endurance has now led to a historic milestone. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ crossed the $900 million mark at the domestic box office on September 5, achieving this feat in just 36 days and becoming the fastest film in history to reach that threshold, according to Deadline.

Only one other film has ever surpassed $900 million domestically: Disney and Lucasfilm’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which took 50 days to achieve this milestone back in 2015. This means ‘Brand New Day’ beat the previous record by a full two weeks, highlighting its exceptional box office trajectory.

The film’s weekly drop-off numbers help clarify this phenomenon. On its sixth Friday in theaters, ‘Brand New Day’ grossed $3.9 million, marking a decline of only around 30 percent from the previous Friday, despite losing 158 theaters heading into the weekend. In comparison, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ experienced a much steeper decline at a similar point in its run, while ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ dropped by a comparable but still larger margin.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and featuring Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Sadie Sink, the film is now approaching an even greater achievement. ‘The Force Awakens’ holds the all-time domestic box office record at approximately $936.6 million, and with ‘Brand New Day’ sitting around $903.6 million as of early September, the gap between the two films has narrowed to about $33 million.

Such impressive legs late in a theatrical run typically stem from repeat viewership, families returning with new audiences, and casual moviegoers continuing to attend weeks after the opening-night crowd has already revealed the plot online. Industry reports have indicated that this sustained audience turnout is key to understanding the film’s remarkable staying power.

The film’s international performance has also been robust. ‘Brand New Day’ garnered $932 million globally during its opening weekend alone and crossed $2 billion worldwide in just 17 days, placing it among a select few films in cinema history to achieve that level so quickly. Its current worldwide total stands at approximately $2.332 billion, ranking it fourth on the all-time global chart.

‘Brand New Day’ has now maintained the number-one domestic spot for six consecutive weekends, a streak not matched since ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ held the top position for seven weekends back in 2022. However, this run is expected to end soon, with ‘Practical Magic 2’ projected to take over the top spot in the upcoming weeks.

Whether ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ will ultimately surpass ‘The Force Awakens’ for the all-time domestic crown remains uncertain, but the film has already rewritten the record books once. With momentum still on its side as it heads into the next few weekends, achieving that final record no longer seems like a long shot.
