‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Breaks Box Office Records with Historic Opening
Box office milestones are rare, and when they occur, it usually takes years for a single franchise entry to truly rewrite the record books. This past weekend, that extraordinary cinematic event took place, surprising even the most seasoned industry analysts.
For months, tracking estimates had painted a positive but conservative picture of what this film might achieve, with early projections suggesting a solid yet unremarkable opening. However, the actual ticket sales told a completely different story.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ achieved the largest domestic opening weekend of all time, raking in $360 million and an impressive $932 million globally, according to Deadline’s comprehensive breakdown of the weekend’s figures. This domestic total surpassed the previous record held by ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which had stood at $357.1 million since April 2019.
The film’s success extended beyond its opening weekend. ‘Brand New Day’ also claimed the title for the biggest weekend at the domestic box office for all films combined, generating $430 million and surpassing the final weekend of April 2019, when ‘Endgame’ led all titles with a $402 million haul.
In addition to the headline numbers, the film set records across nearly every exhibition format tracked. It recorded the largest global opening ever for ScreenX and 4DX formats combined at $31 million, the biggest Dolby Cinema opening weekend domestically at over $11 million, and the highest per-screen average in Dolby Cinema history at $63,000. Its Wednesday and Thursday preview earnings of $72 million also broke the previous record of $60 million, previously set by ‘Endgame.’

For the film’s stars, these numbers translated into personal milestones. This opening marked the largest domestic launch of Tom Holland’s career as Spider-Man, while also being the biggest domestic and global opening for both Zendaya and director Destin Daniel Cretton individually.
Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman celebrated this achievement in a statement, expressing gratitude by saying, “360 million thank-yous to all the filmmakers, actors, producers, and to my colleagues at Sony, who created such a fantastic film and an exceptional marketing and distribution campaign.” He added, “Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja echoed this sentiment in a note to staff, calling the weekend a powerful reminder that moviegoing remains “one of the world’s great shared cultural experiences.” He specifically credited Cretton, producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal, and Holland for adding new depth to the character.
The film’s success also had significant ripple effects beyond the box office, with Regal Entertainment reporting its largest four-day span in company history, thanks to the combined turnout for ‘Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey,’ generating over $160 million globally in ticket and concession revenue.
With both critics and audiences responding positively, holding a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore rating, ‘Brand New Day’ has firmly established itself as one of the defining box office events of the year.
