‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Briefly Loses Box Office Lead After 3 Weeks at No. 1
Late August has emerged as one of the busiest periods at the domestic box office in recent years, with several new releases vying for attention against a superhero powerhouse that shows no signs of slowing down. Even after four consecutive weekends at No. 1, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ continues to dominate theaters well beyond the typical lifespan of most blockbusters.
However, this dominance faced a temporary setback this weekend when a new horror sequel managed to leapfrog Tom Holland’s web-slinger for a single day. ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ took the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office on Friday, grossing $10.6 million from 3,303 North American theaters, compared to Spider-Man’s $9.8 million.
Despite this Friday upset, which was surprising given Marvel’s stronghold over the summer box office, the overall picture remains unchanged heading into Sunday. Sony’s Marvel release is expected to reclaim the top spot for the weekend, with projections estimating $36.5 million through Sunday for its fourth consecutive weekend at No. 1, marking a roughly 47% decline from the previous weekend’s earnings.
This anticipated weekend total would bring ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s’ domestic total to $852.4 million, putting it on track to surpass 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and become the No. 3 highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office. It would also inch closer to overtaking ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ $858.3 million domestic total, although that record is complicated by Endgame’s upcoming theatrical reissue in September.

Meanwhile, ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ is projected to finish its opening weekend with around $23.7 million. This sixth installment in the long-running horror franchise, which began with the original ‘Insidious’ in 2011, is opening below its immediate predecessor, 2023’s ‘Insidious: The Red Door,’ which debuted at $33 million. However, with a modest $18 million production budget, it should still turn a healthy profit despite the softer start.
Directed by Jacob Chase, ‘Out of the Further’ follows a young mother who discovers her ability to travel into the Further, the franchise’s signature purgatorial dimension, only to find that whatever awaits her there can make the return trip with her. The film currently holds a 60% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 70% audience score. The Hollywood Reporter’s Frank Scheck noted in his review that the movie “proves routine in its elaborate plot machinations.”

In fourth place, Jason Statham’s latest action film, ‘Mutiny,’ opened with $2.8 million on Friday from 2,703 screens, targeting a modest $7.4 million for its opening weekend. This performance trails similar recent Statham films like 2024’s ‘The Beekeeper’ ($16.5 million opening) and 2025’s ‘A Working Man’ ($15 million opening), though it outpaces ‘Shelter,’ an earlier 2026 Statham release that opened to $5.2 million.
Beyond the top three, ‘The Odyssey’ continued its steady run in its sixth week of release, adding another $18.5 million domestically to push its cumulative total past $538 million. Combined with the weekend’s other holdovers, the overall box office is expected to reach roughly $126.5 million, marking another $100 million-plus weekend and continuing a strong late-summer stretch for theaters.
With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ still projected to win the weekend despite briefly losing Friday’s crown, the film’s four-week reign at the top of the box office remains secure as it heads into its fifth frame. Whether any upcoming release can finally dethrone it remains uncertain, but for now, Peter Parker continues to dominate one of the busiest theatrical calendars in recent memory.
