Marvel Studios has been striving for nearly a decade to break the box office record established by its 2019 crossover event, watching various franchise entries fall short of the monumental numbers posted by ‘Avengers: Endgame’ during its historic run. For a long time, that record seemed untouchable, and few anticipated that a single hero could challenge it, especially not a solo outing for Spider-Man.

However, that expectation has been dramatically overturned in the past three weeks. Sony and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has been rewriting box office history at an astonishing pace, leaving even industry veterans in disbelief, and the film’s latest achievement may be its most significant yet.

As of this week, ‘Brand New Day’ is poised to become the highest-grossing Marvel film in domestic box office history this weekend, surpassing the all-time domestic total of ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ The film has already crossed $810 million domestically, rapidly approaching Endgame’s $858 million benchmark just days after becoming the fastest movie to reach $800 million at the North American box office.

The record-breaking momentum has been remarkable from the outset. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film achieved $800 million domestically in just 19 days, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which took 23 days to reach that milestone, according to Deadline. This places ‘Brand New Day’ at the No. 4 position on the all-time domestic chart, trailing only ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ as it heads into this final stretch.

The film’s opening weekend set the stage for its success. ‘Brand New Day’ debuted with a staggering $360 million domestically, breaking Endgame’s previous opening weekend record of $357.1 million, while its $932 million global opening ranks as the second-largest worldwide debut ever, only behind Endgame’s $1.22 billion start.

Since then, the records have continued to accumulate. The film became the fastest movie in history to cross $400 million domestically, achieving this in just four days, and the second-fastest to reach $1 billion worldwide, accomplishing this in six days, again trailing only Endgame’s five-day pace. It also recorded the highest-grossing Monday and Tuesday in box office history, surpassing previous records held by ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ respectively.

Globally, ‘Brand New Day’ has already surpassed the $2 billion mark, becoming only the eighth film in history to reach this milestone and establishing itself as the highest-grossing release of 2026 so far, outpacing Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ ‘Toy Story 5,’ and several other major titles. Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman humorously remarked on opening weekend, “So I guess movies aren’t dead after all?”

Directed by Cretton and featuring Tom Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal, ‘Brand New Day’ picks up years after the events of ‘No Way Home,’ following Peter Parker as he navigates life after being erased from the memories of everyone he loves. This premise, combined with the film’s ensemble of returning and new characters, has resonated with audiences in a way few analysts anticipated prior to its release.

As ‘Brand New Day’ approaches the domestic record held by Endgame, and with several major titles like ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Dune: Part Three’ still on the horizon for this year, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the strongest years for theatrical box office since before the pandemic. Whether ‘Brand New Day’ will retain this domestic title once ‘Doomsday’ arrives in December remains to be seen, but for now, Peter Parker has officially claimed a record many thought would never be broken.
