Marisa Tomei has spent over three decades navigating Hollywood’s demanding beauty and fitness standards, crafting a career that spans from broad comedy to prestige drama. At 61, she is now using her platform to challenge the industry’s rigid assumptions about what it means to stay healthy.

This perspective has become increasingly central to how Tomei discusses her life outside of acting, especially as she embraces a more public role in the wellness space. Instead of promoting an elaborate routine filled with intense workouts or restrictive diets, she has opted for a more relaxed approach.

In a recent exclusive interview, Tomei revealed that her health philosophy diverges significantly from traditional fitness culture. “I like a lot of sleep!” the Oscar winner told PEOPLE with a laugh. “I also need to be in nature. But I don’t even go to the gym. I do exercise, but I tend to favor functional movement, like walking.”

This stripped-down philosophy stands in stark contrast to an industry often associated with intense workout routines and strict beauty standards, particularly for women beyond the age Hollywood typically focuses on.

This mindset also influenced Tomei’s decision to co-found Terra Mare, a supplement company that officially launched in June 2025. The brand, named using the Italian words for “Earth” and “Sea,” specifically targets women’s health, addressing areas like hormonal balance, metabolism, and age-related changes with organic, globally sourced ingredients.

The company’s product lineup features items like Morning Restore, a collagen powder enriched with vitamins, prebiotics, and probiotics, along with other offerings such as Derma Renew and Daily Rejuvenation. Tomei emphasized that the simplicity of these products was intentional, designed to counter the pressure many women feel to pursue unattainable standards.

“You don’t have to really think about it,” she said regarding her love for the products. “There’s always been a lot of pressure on women, so I wanted something simple that wasn’t going to create another cycle of chasing perfectionism.” She added, “I would say that’s been a big part of my life—slowing down, remembering simplicity, and letting go of perfectionism.”

Tomei attributes much of her grounded approach to her upbringing in New York City, particularly the value her family placed on shared meals and consistency, even amidst busy schedules. She specifically credits her mother for instilling habits that have stayed with her into adulthood.

“I was really lucky that my mother, even though she worked, made a meal for us every day, and we all sat down together, and that simple and consistent thing was built into my nervous system,” Tomei shared, emphasizing that shared laughter and togetherness are just as essential to her wellbeing as sleep or movement.

This blend of personal history and business philosophy places Tomei among a growing number of celebrities who have entered the supplement market in recent years, joining names like Kourtney Kardashian Barker’s Lemme and Kate Hudson’s InBloom in targeting wellness-conscious consumers directly. However, unlike some of those ventures, Tomei’s messaging emphasizes simplicity as a selling point rather than optimization or intensity.

With new film and television roles on her agenda this year, Tomei seems to be balancing a demanding career with a wellness philosophy centered around doing less, not more—a message that stands in stark contrast to much of the industry she has worked in for decades.
