Warner Bros. and DC Studios began this year with significant momentum behind their revamped cinematic universe, buoyed by a series of prior successes. This confidence made the studio’s next major release feel like a logical progression in expanding the franchise and regaining its footing.

However, what transpired became a cautionary tale that industry analysts continue to analyze weeks later. A film that once held considerable expectations for broadening the DC Universe’s roster of heroes has instead turned into a stark example of how quickly a big-budget gamble can falter.

‘Supergirl’ is projected to conclude its theatrical run with earnings of under $200 million globally, solidifying its status as one of DC’s most significant flops. The film debuted with just $37.1 million domestically and $62.6 million worldwide, figures that fell well short of the studio’s already modest internal expectations prior to its release.

The disappointing start only worsened from there. The film experienced a staggering 74% drop in its second weekend, marking one of the steepest audience declines in recent superhero movie history, quickly falling out of the domestic box office top five within just two weeks of its release. By its third weekend, the film had plummeted to eighth place, prompting Warner Bros. to reportedly reduce its screens by more than 1,000 in response to the dwindling demand.

The financial implications of these numbers are genuinely staggering. With a production budget of $170 million and an additional $120 million allocated for marketing, ‘Supergirl’ needed to gross between $300 million and $425 million globally just to break even. According to Variety, the studio now anticipates losses ranging from $80 million to $120 million when all is said and done.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and featuring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the film follows Superman’s cousin as she reluctantly teams up with an unexpected ally on an epic journey. Critics had mixed reactions to the final product, with the film holding a 55% “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences responded more favorably with a 76% score, indicating that the film’s struggles were likely due to initial turnout rather than outright rejection.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn acknowledged the disappointing results early on, issuing a statement confirming that ‘Supergirl’ did not meet the studio’s box office expectations, while expressing confidence in the broader DCU narrative being developed. That reassurance did little to cushion the impact of what has become the second notable Warner Bros. flop of 2026, following this spring’s ‘The Bride!’, which similarly struggled with just $23 million worldwide against a $90 million budget.

Industry analysts have highlighted a broader lesson from the film’s failure: a strong launch for a flagship character like Superman does not automatically ensure audience turnout for lesser-known figures within the same universe, even with brand recognition on their side. This challenge looms large for DC Studios as it prepares for upcoming releases, including ‘Clayface’ this October and ‘Man of Tomorrow’ next summer.

With ‘Supergirl’ already available for digital purchase just over a month after its theatrical debut, the film’s lackluster run serves as a stark reminder that superhero brand power alone no longer guarantees box office success.
