Netflix has officially acquired the rights to distribute the long-awaited live-action adaptation of the massive ‘Gundam’ franchise. This major development comes with the high-profile announcement that Hollywood stars Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo have been cast in the leading roles. Produced by Legendary Entertainment in collaboration with Bandai Namco Filmworks, the project aims to bring the iconic anime property to a global audience. Reports indicate that filming is scheduled to begin in March 2026 with production taking place across locations in Australia and the United Kingdom.

The film will be directed and written by Jim Mickle who is best known for his work as the showrunner of the popular Netflix series ‘Sweet Tooth’. Mickle is taking over the directorial duties from Jordan Vogt-Roberts who was previously attached to the project during its earlier development stages several years ago. In addition to his writing and directing responsibilities, Mickle will produce the film alongside his partner Linda Moran. Noah Centineo is also set to serve as a producer on the feature with his own producing partner Enzo Marc.

While specific plot details remain strictly under wraps, insiders suggest the story will draw inspiration from the themes established in the original 1979 anime created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. The narrative is expected to be set in the Universal Century which is a future era where humanity has colonized space to escape the issues of Earth’s overpopulation. The central conflict typically involves a war for independence between these space colonies and the government of Earth fought using giant mechanized robots known as mobile suits. Early descriptions of the script hint at a romance resembling “Romeo and Juliet” involving characters on opposing sides of this galactic war.

Sydney Sweeney continues her streak of high-profile roles following her recent success in the romantic comedy ‘Anyone But You’ and the box office hit ‘The Housemaid’ which grossed over 300 million dollars globally. Her involvement brings significant star power to the project which Legendary views as a potential franchise starter for the studio. Noah Centineo is similarly building his action credentials having recently starred in ‘Black Adam’ and the spy series ‘The Recruit’. He is also currently attached to another major adaptation and is playing a lead role in the upcoming ‘Street Fighter’ movie.

The ‘Gundam’ franchise is considered one of the most influential properties in the history of Japanese animation and science fiction. It redefined the mecha genre by focusing on the realistic and militaristic aspects of robot warfare rather than just superhero-style action. The brand generates more than 600 million dollars annually from toy sales and merchandise alone which proves its enduring popularity over nearly five decades. This live-action adaptation represents a significant investment by Netflix and Legendary to capture that dedicated worldwide fanbase.
