Some of the most buzzworthy horror films start from humble beginnings. Dylan Clark’s 2022 short film ‘Portrait of God’ is a seven-minute narrative filmed in a dim studio over five days featuring a single character. It has since garnered 8.6 million views on YouTube, capturing the attention of Hollywood.

The concept is both simple and eerie. A devout young woman prepares a presentation on a painting titled ‘Portrait of God‘, which appears blank to some viewers, while others claim to see the face of God within its shadows. Clark gained recognition by sharing horror shorts on YouTube that attracted millions of views, and this particular film became his signature piece.

The feature adaptation now has its leading star. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Chase Infiniti will headline the upcoming religious horror film ‘Portrait of God’ directed by Dylan Clark. Notably, Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele are set to produce, marking their first collaboration.

The project has also found a new home. Lionsgate has acquired it and given the green light for production, as reported by Deadline. Previously, it was under Universal, which had secured Clark’s spec in a competitive bidding process in December 2025 but quietly dropped it earlier this year.

For Infiniti, this role marks her first film since her breakout performance in ‘One Battle After Another’, which won Best Picture. She received nominations at the Actor Awards, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs for her role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film. Additionally, she is a nominee for both a Golden Globe and an Emmy, with ‘The Testaments’ among her notable works.

The impressive producing team adds to the project’s allure. Raimi and Rob Tapert are producing through Ghost House, while Peele and Win Rosenfeld are on board through Monkeypaw Productions. This collaboration brings together two of the most significant names in horror for the first time.

Furthermore, this project continues Raimi’s partnership with Lionsgate, which is also backing his upcoming film ‘Magic’. Clark co-wrote the script with Joe Russo, who penned ‘The Inheritance’. While the studio is keeping the plot details under wraps, sources describe it as a fresh take on religious horror.

Clark’s rise has been rapid. His feature directorial debut will be the reboot of ‘The Blair Witch Project’ for Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, meaning ‘Portrait of God’ will follow that project. Lionsgate has labeled him one of the most exciting emerging voices in horror, highlighting the exceptional creative team behind the film.

The inspiration for the short film came from an unexpected source. While developing it, Clark was enrolled in a religious studies course focused on Islam, where discussions about idolatry and the prohibition against depicting God resonated with him. These themes merged with his passion for religious horror.

Clark shared with Metroland Now that “I’m not a very religious person,” and that he has always viewed religion from an outsider’s perspective. This unique viewpoint may lend the story its openness, a valuable trait for a film tackling a question that lacks straightforward answers.

The short’s acclaim also contributes to its momentum. Letterboxd users have rated it highly, and fans have long been advocating for Clark to receive a feature budget. Now, with a rising star and two of the genre’s most influential producers, he finally has that opportunity.

While many details remain unknown, including a release date and additional cast members, the combination of Infiniti, Raimi, Peele, and Clark positions ‘Portrait of God’ as one of the most intriguing horror projects currently in development.
