The premiere of ‘Coven Academy’ begins in a hidden school that prefers to remain undiscovered. Created by Tim Federle, known for ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’, this new supernatural dramedy premiered on October 1 on Freeform at 8 p.m. ET/PT, with the entire season available on Disney+ and Hulu the following day.

Initially intended for Disney’s streaming platforms, the series features a cast including Malina Weissman, Tiffani Thiessen, Malachi Barton, Louis Thresher, Jordan Leftwich, and Ora Duplass, with Devon Sawa appearing as Mr. Cole. Critics have noted that the show leans more towards young adult themes than traditional Disney content.

Reviewers have drawn comparisons to ‘American Horror Story: Coven’, with Popped highlighting the familiar setup of a New Orleans school filled with young witches and a headmistress reminiscent of Cordelia. This makes the final moments of the premiere particularly intriguing, as it shifts the narrative from a witch-school story to a vampire-stalking thriller.

The episode opens with three young witches being attacked by vampires on their way back to the academy. Reports of these “random attacks” have been circulating, and by morning, the girls have disappeared. Briar Roberts (Weissman), a Brooklyn teen mourning her mother’s death, arrives in the city under the impression that she is being sent to Crescent Veil, a school for troubled girls.

However, Crescent Veil is merely a cover for Coven Academy. Headmistress Miss Graves (Thiessen) is already aware of Briar’s anger issues and her tendency to investigate her mother’s death through police files. When Graves inadvertently says something inappropriate, objects on her desk begin to tremble, signaling that Briar’s powers are beginning to awaken.

Briar attempts to escape, but Tegan (Duplass) catches up to her and reveals that she is a witch being hunted. Tegan possesses time-bending abilities that leave her drained, while Sasha (Leftwich) can read emotions but finds Briar unreadable, raising her suspicions. Graves promises to provide answers about Briar’s mother, but only if she agrees to train first.

Meanwhile, the warlocks are on the hunt for the vampires. Jake (Barton) performs a powerful locator spell to determine if the missing girls are still alive, feeling guilty for being with them the night they vanished. McKenna (Swayam Bhatia) cautions him that he is nearing another suspension and expresses distrust towards the new girl.

The twist comes in the premiere’s closing scene. Briar’s cab driver from earlier, who returned her backpack and asked her out, is revealed to be a new vampire named Ollie (Thresher). The vampire Alexander (Brendon Tremblay) violently rips out a man’s heart and hands it to a woman in charge, who writes Briar’s name in blood on a brick wall and instructs Alexander to find her.

Alexander protests, suggesting that Ollie should handle Briar instead. This indicates that Briar is already a target, and the boy she is attracted to may be the one sent to get close to her. Screen Rant notes that a love triangle involving Briar, Jake, and Ollie begins to form almost immediately, intertwining danger and romance from the outset.

A major question remains regarding what Graves knows about Briar’s mother and why vampires seem particularly interested in Briar. Popped reports that the season consists of 21 short chapters, totaling approximately 300 minutes, with nearly every chapter concluding with a twist or cliffhanger. The review also mentions that the final stretch resolves the main mystery while leaving the door open for a potential second season.

The soundtrack has also garnered attention, featuring artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Sienna Spiro, Lady Gaga, and KATSEYE, which aligns well with the show’s youthful, rebellious energy.
