‘9-1-1’ Season 10 Trailer Unveils the 118’s Most Intense Emergency Yet
‘9-1-1‘ has consistently opened its seasons with disasters that make viewers reconsider their local emergency plans. The Season 9 premiere featured a meteor shower, launching LAPD’s Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) and firefighter Hen Wilson (Aisha Hinds) into a space adventure. Following that was always going to be a challenge.
This fall, the hit procedural celebrates its 10th season on ABC, set to premiere on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. ET. This season marks a significant change as it will be the first without Peter Krause’s Captain Bobby Nash. New episodes will be available on Hulu the day after they air.
The first full trailer has now been released, and it escalates beyond a space mission.
The trailer opens with a frantic caller claiming they are trapped in a river of lava. Emergency vehicles rush toward a volcano erupting in the city, with ash and lava forming the numbers 9-1-1 on the ground, accompanied by the B-52s’ “Lava” playing in the background.

The stakes become personal quickly, as Athena finds herself in peril. The trailer begins with her calling out for someone in danger, flashlight in hand, while her daughter May explains over the phone that Athena has crawled through a hole underground. The LAFD rushes below to locate her, with her son Harry shouting for her, and the trailer concludes with May in tears and Buck calling out for survivors.
The 118 also faces significant challenges above ground. Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) points out the lack of a protocol for a volcano in Los Angeles. The trailer showcases a daring rescue involving a basket lowered from a ladder, Eddie (Ryan Guzman) saving a dog, and firefighters leaping between cars to avoid the lava-covered ground.

The volcano’s emergence isn’t random. Showrunner Tim Minear shared with Entertainment Weekly that the season’s initial disaster appears to start as a sinkhole before evolving into something much larger. He noted that the concept is inspired by the 1997 disaster film ‘Volcano’. Minear describes the multi-episode crisis as catastrophic for property values, the public, and the heroes of Station 118.
The premiere episode is aptly titled “That Sinking Feeling,” featuring the 118 confronting a city-wide emergency while Athena takes on a new detective case and May builds confidence in her new job. Athena is adjusting to her new partner, Det. Newell (Rick Otto), while Buck navigates his role as a foster father.
Fans have taken notice, with the DiscussingFilm post already garnering 6.8K likes and 316.3K views at the time of the screenshot. Based on the footage, the series that once sent its heroes to space has found yet another way to elevate its disaster narrative, blending personal drama with natural catastrophe in an ambitious manner.
