Few sequels have had a bigger runway than ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. The follow-up to the original film grossed $1.5 billion and won an Oscar. Released 36 years after the 1986 original, it became the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career.

A third film has been the obvious next question ever since. Reports first emerged in January 2024 about a third installment in development, but Paramount officially confirmed it at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 16, 2026, with Cruise set to reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also returning, and the studio announced that a script is currently in progress.

Now, Cruise himself has provided an update in his typically cryptic style. During a recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show to promote his new movie ‘Digger’, Cruise addressed ‘Top Gun 3’ for the first time since his return was officially confirmed, offering a brief update.

“Maverick’s going to be in it. There’s going to be fighter jets. It’s going to be cool. There’s going to be cool music. That’s about all I can say.”

While this isn’t exactly a plot synopsis, fans have taken it in stride. The playful tease quickly spread online, fitting Cruise’s approach to these franchises, where he promises spectacle first and reveals details later.

The mention of music is particularly noteworthy, as sound has played a significant role in the franchise’s identity. Cruise reportedly turned down around 30 songs before selecting OneRepublic’s “I Ain’t Worried” for the beach scene in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. This track was the second single from a soundtrack that also featured Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand”.

Behind the scenes, the project is still taking shape. The script is being penned by Ehren Kruger and Christopher McQuarrie, with Bruckheimer acknowledging that ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ director Joseph Kosinski will not return. Kosinski is currently occupied with back-to-back projects, including a U.F.O. thriller for Apple and Universal’s ‘Miami Vice’ reboot. Paramount is reportedly on the lookout for a new director to lead the project.

Casting remains another open question. Actors Miles Teller and Glen Powell have been rumored to return alongside Cruise. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ also marked Val Kilmer’s final film role as Iceman. Plot details are still under wraps, and fans are eager to see if familiar faces from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ will make a comeback.

Cruise’s schedule may also influence the timeline. Before ‘Top Gun 3’ comes into focus, he has other commitments. His comments serve as a reminder that while the sequel is officially happening, it is coming together slowly.

For now, fans can look forward to jets, music, and the return of Maverick. If this tease indicates anything, it’s that Cruise is not ready to reveal more than necessary, ensuring speculation continues until Paramount shares the next piece of the puzzle.
