Few superhero sequels have faced a longer journey to the big screen than ‘The Batman Part II.’ Initially scheduled for October 2025, its release date shifted to October 2026, then to October 2027, before finally landing on February 2028 as the script and post-production timeline were adjusted.

After much anticipation, filming commenced in London this summer. Director Matt Reeves marked the start of production by sharing a photo of the film’s slate, giving fans hope that the long delays were finally behind them.

However, that momentum has now come to a halt. On October 5, filming for the sequel was paused as Reeves stepped away for personal reasons.

This news was first reported as an exclusive by Deadline, which stated that production on the Warner Bros. and DC Studios film is temporarily halted while Reeves focuses on a family matter. The studio expressed its full support for Reeves and looks forward to resuming the project soon.

Details regarding the family matter remain undisclosed, and the studio has chosen to keep the reason private. Just Jared noted that no specifics were provided about what Reeves is facing, which seems appropriate given the circumstances.

Filming had been progressing in London prior to the pause. According to Deadline’s sources, it is too soon to determine if this stoppage will impact the February 18, 2028 release date, leaving the film’s schedule uncertain for now.

This pause comes at a time when the project has already experienced significant delays. CBR highlighted that the sequel was initially postponed due to the 2023 WGA strike and later because the script was incomplete. The Hollywood Reporter noted that its development has been a complicated process, with multiple start date changes as Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin worked on the script.

Reeves plays a pivotal role in this segment of the DC universe. He directed 2022’s ‘The Batman,’ which earned $770.3 million globally, and initiated the spinoff series ‘The Penguin’ featuring Colin Farrell, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. He is also producing DC’s upcoming ‘Clayface’ movie.

The sequel boasts a large ensemble cast. Robert Pattinson reprises his role as Bruce Wayne, with Andy Serkis returning as Alfred and Farrell back as the Penguin, according to CBR. Screen Rant adds that Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, and Brian Tyree Henry have joined the cast, although DC Studios has yet to officially announce their roles.

For the moment, the film remains on the studio’s schedule, and DC Studios has characterized the stoppage as temporary. The Playlist notes that the next steps are unclear, including whether Reeves might return in some capacity once his situation permits.

What is most important right now is that Reeves has the time he needs. Fans have been waiting for this sequel for years, and a bit more patience is a small price to pay while he attends to something far more significant than a release date.
